Landscape Development is a popular concentration within the associate of applied science degree program in Horticulture. This concentration prepares our students for a career in the Landscape Industry within areas of Landscape Design, Landscape Contracting, and Landscape Maintenance.

Students gain knowledge in plant materials identification and values, landscape design, landscape construction, and arboriculture. One course prepares students to take a NY DEC test to get the pesticide technician license. Hands-on learning opportunities are numerous and Design/Build is an important component of our landscape projects. So, in addition to design projects, our students get to work on actual residential, community, and campus landscape project. In outdoor projects students get to operate equipment and tools, build hardscape elements such as patios, walkways, walls, and rock gardens. They also learn correct methods of plant installation & maintenance of trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants.

The Landscape Green Industry is a major recruiter of our graduates at the local and national level. Summer internship opportunities in the industry are plentiful and students are assisted in securing them. Every semester our students get to travel on different fieldtrips to trade shows, nurseries, botanic gardens and arboreta. As part of the Horticulture Institute, all horticulture program students are involved in a wide range of entrepreneurial activities such as plant sales, planting projects, and arbor day. To complement our state-of-the-art greenhouses, our students are currently involved in establishing an outdoor container plant nursery where trees, shrubs and perennials can be grown for sale. Native plant materials will be an important component of this nursery.
