Student Profile: Luke Martin

Hometown: Clarence, NY
Graduation Year: May 2015

Why did you choose to attend Morrisville?
“I received several recommendations to go to Morrisville State College from coworkers and superiors at my job and knew of Morrisville’s reputable School of Agriculture. It was an easy choice."

What activities have you been involved with on and off campus? How have these activities helped you for your career?
“I was involved in intramural sports, the lacrosse team, Dairy Club, Livestock Club, served as VP of CFFA and President of RAA, and was an RA on campus for two semesters. I was very active on and off campus and I feel that each group or affiliation helped me in my leadership, communicative, and time management skills among others. I always appreciate when I am able to perform real-life application of knowledge gained in classes. They have all provided me with this opportunity in their own ways and I will be able to relate those experiences into my future professional career.”

What MSC professor has influenced you and why?
“Professors Hayes, Tucker, and Muss have all been tremendous influences in my life through my time at Morrisville.  Professor Hayes encouraged me, through every lecture taught, to push myself and make a difference in the agricultural industry while pursuing a career I love.  Professor Tucker taught me many skills I use daily in business and real life and, specifically, worked with me and encouraged me through the region’s business plan competition. Likewise, Professor Muss taught me many applicable lessons of business and how to act and perform professionally through his BSAD 300 class. I am thankful for these three role models, encouragers, and influences in my life among others who have helped me get where I am today.”

What has been your favorite campus event or activity?
“I always looked forward to various intramural sports and tournaments throughout the semesters at MSC. Coach Perkins did a phenomenal job coordinating this and it showed in the involvement, attitude, and attendance from the campus body.”

Where have you interned? What have you learned through your internship experience that will help you in your future?
“I was a corporate Agronomy Intern in the summer of 2014 with GROWMARK FS, LLC in Caledonia, New York. This internship is especially applicable to my future career as it led to a full-time position. This opportunity gave me a career where I will certainly be applying all I’ve learned through professors, classes, and experiences at Morrisville State College.”

What was the most important class you have taken at MSC? What did you learn?
“Professor Muss taught my BSAD 300 Managerial Communications class. This has absolutely been the most important class that I have taken at Morrisville State College. Through my internship and into my job, there have been countless instances where I have been able to recall information learned and been able to apply the knowledge attained in class. The presentations given in class and the real-life scenarios Professor Muss instilled in us have been absolutely vital in my success in the business realm.”

What are your plans after college or your career goals?
“I have a career set up through GROWMARK FS, LLC. They are an agricultural cooperative and I will be involved in precision agriculture.  This career was made possible through Morrisville State College and the entire School of Agriculture staff. I cannot thank them enough for helping me grow in my education and professional knowledge.”

What advice would you give other students?
“Take advantage of all opportunities set before you at MSC. Get involved and go outside of your comfort zone. Learn from all you do here in your successes and in your failures as well.”
