MSC's Strengths

The strength of the Morrisville State College Equine Science and Management program is twofold. First, the courses offer practical experience in handling horses. The program provides the student with the opportunity to concentrate on breeding, training, nutrition, and management specifically with horses, as opposed to a generalized group of livestock.

The second strength of Morrisville State College's Equine Science and Management program is the quality of the facilities available to the student. The College has three 80’ x 264’ indoor riding arenas, a 100 x 200 outdoor arena, a 1/2 mile race track, four horse barns, a breaking and training facility, two hot walkers, trails, paddocks, and all of the associated equipment and supplies necessary for an exemplary educational experience.

Morrisville State College employs 11 full-time faculty and staff in the Equine Science program area, and nearly 400 horses are available for students' use. The curriculum enables students to develop skills that include: the care and traning of horses, racing, riding, driving, breeding, and business and stable management. The 270 students majoring in Equine Science at MSC have varied objectives; many intend to pursue a career in some aspect of the horse industry, while others may take technical courses from related areas of study to expand their employment opportunities.

In June of 2001, USA Today described the Morrisville State College Equine Institute as being home to the most diversified equine studies program in the Nation. The MSC Equine Institute offers options at the Associates and Bachelor of Technology level in five separate areas: equine breeding, English and Western training and equitation, and pleasure driving and racing( Standardbreds and Thoroughbreds).

Additionally, to assist in the fiscal management of nearly four hundred horses, the MSC Equine Institute undertakes many entrepreneurial ventures, including the breaking and training of horses, racing for purses at the pari-mutual and county fair level, showing horses, leasing horses, buying and selling of horses, standing of syndicated and privately owned stallions, and operating a yearling Standardbred auction.
