Football to kick-off season September 6

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State College football team will kick-off the 2008 season, Saturday, September 6 against SUNY Cortland at 1 p.m. at Drake Field on the Morrisville State campus.

Twelfth year head coach, Terry Dow (61-51, 11 seasons) and staff, lead Morrisville State into their third season of NCAA Division III competition, the first within the elite New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC).

The Mustangs, who finished 3-7 last season, enter 2008 with a schedule composed of conference opponents SUNY Cortland, Kean, Montclair State, Rowan, William Paterson, Western Connecticut, College of New Jersey, Brockport and Buffalo State.

Returning just ten starters, the Mustangs have made a major roster overhaul and upgrade in talent on both sides of the ball and will look to the upperclassmen to lead the newcomers to a new level of play this season.

Seniors Billy Poling (Waretown, NJ), Ryan Baker (Chittenango, NY), Eddie Hull (Syracuse, NY) and Larry Cabrera (Tappen Zee, NY) will anchor the offensive unit for the final time in 2008, having gained significant experience throughout their playing careers with the Mustangs.

Baker and Cabrera, offensive linemen, will provide solid protection for quarterback, Poling, who led the team in passing last season completing 94-of-217 passes for 1,030 yards and six touchdown scores.

Hull, the Mustangs leader in receiving with 454 yards and three scores in 2007, is expected to anchor the receiving corps this season.

Morrisville State will look to senior defensive end, Luke Visingard (Endicott, NY) to lead the young defensive unit. Visingard was second on the team in total tackles in 2007 with 59 (40 solo) while leading the unit in tackles for a loss (18.5-75 yards) and sacks (11).

“There’s no doubt we’re still a young team,” said Dow, “but the level of talent we have now as opposed to the previous two seasons doesn’t compare. We’re better at every position than we were a year ago and that is bound to show itself on Saturday’s.”

The Mustangs schedule and results can be found on the athletics web site at or by calling the sports information office at 315.684.6250.

Morrisville State enters its third year as a provisional member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Division III in 2008. Upon successful completion of the provisional period, Morrisville State will be a candidate for full accreditation as a member of the NCAA.
