Cortland nets 6-3 win over Morrisville State hockey

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Cortland men's hockey team outscored Morrisville St., 4-1, in the third period and defeated the Mustangs, 6-3, in SUNYAC action Saturday night at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons improved to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in the conference, while Morrisville St. fell to 0-7-1 and 0-5-1.

Junior Patrick Palmisano (Ann Arbor, MI/Bay State Breakers) has two goals for Cortland, senior Mike Maier (Rochester/Niagara University) and freshman Ryan Markell (Columbus, OH/Ohio St.) each contributed a goal and an assist and senior Mike Egan (Smithtown/NY Apple Core) and freshman Jake Saville (Bellingham, WA/Marquette Rangers) scored one goal apiece. Sophomore Jarrett Gold (East Setauket/NY Bobcats) collected three assists and freshman Kyle Haines (Topsfield, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) had two assists. Sophomore goalie Dan Jewell (Medford/National Sports Academy) made 23 saves.

Senior Keith Williams (Whitesboro/Whitesboro H.S.) and juniors Kyle Roberts (Whitesboro/Wellington Dukes) and Andrew Alarie (Carlisle, ON/Oshawa Legionaires) each recorded a goal for the Mustangs. Sophomore goalie Caylin Relkoff (Grand Forks, BC/Huntsville Muskota Otters) stopped 24 shots.

After a scoreless first periods, each team netted a pair of goals in the second period. Alarie made it 1-0 at one minute, 53 seconds, then Saville tied the game at 3:49 and Egan made it 2-1 Cortland with a wrist shot from the slot on a power play at 8:13. Williams tied the game just over two minutes later when his shot snuck inside the left post.

The Red Dragons siezed control of the game in the third. Palmisano and Markell scored even-strength goals two minutes apart for a 4-2 lead, but Roberts cut it to 4-3 with a slap shot on the power play. Palmisano, however, netted his second of the game at 11:57 with the man advantage and Maier sealed the win with an empty-netter at 18:49.
