Alfred University tops Morrisville State men's laxers 12-6

ALFRED, N.Y. – Alfred University used five first quarter scores to top the visiting Morrisville State College men’s lacrosse team by a 12-6 final Thursday afternoon in Alfred.

Alfred raced out to an early 5-0 lead, with three scores coming within the first 2:30 of the contest. Justin Kieffer put Alfred on the board at 13:52 with an unassisted score and Brendan Murphy added a second at 13:15 for the two goal lead. Kieffer found Mike Russo to extend the lead to three at 12:38. Marc Zoyhofski netted the fourth Saxton score with 5:10 remaining as Russo closed out the quarter with his second of five scores of the afternoon.

In the second quarter, Morrisville State’s Eric Stein (Oswego, NY) put the Mustangs on the board with an unassisted score just 53 seconds into the quarter before Alfred’s Justin Gill responded with a goal off an assist from Murphy. Kieffer gave Alfred the 7-1 lead with his second of the afternoon off a pass from Russo. Morrisville’s Tim Bobbett (Cazenovia, NY) made it 7-2 at the half, netting the man advantage score with 2:03 remaining in the half.

In the third quarter, Zoyhofski and Russo each added a score to the Alfred tallies while Morrisville’s Andrew Elsmore (Scituate, MA) was able to find the back of the net for his first of three scores on the afternoon.

Alfred jumped out to the 12-3 advantage in the final quarter with a score from Zoyhofski and two from Russo for a game high five goals, before Morrisville State closed out the game with three scores, a man down score from Stein and two additional scores from Elsmore.

Alfred held the advantage in shots on goal, tallying 32 to the Mustangs 21, while Morrisville State edged the Saxtons in ground balls 36-33.

Adam Schutz earned the win in net for Alfred, saving four in 52:19 of play. John Landi saved one in the final 7:41.

Jimmy Hodgson (Cazenovia, NY) recorded the loss in net, saving three in 11:32. Mike Hinchey (Kingston, NY) saved two in the final 48:28.

Morrisville State (1-3) returns to the field Saturday, playing at Union College against Anna Maria College at 1 p.m.

Andrew Elsmore (Scituate, MA) led Morrisville State with three goals as teammate Eric Stein (Oswego, NY) added two.

Alfred opened the contest with three straight scores within two and a half minutes to claim an early 3-0 lead. Justin Kieffer gave Alfred the 1-0 lead, netting an unassisted score at 13:52 before Brendan Murphy added a second at 13:15. Mike Russo extended the lead to three, scoring off an assist from Kieffer at 12:38 for the three goal advantage.

Morrisville State enters its third year as a provisional member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Division III in 2008. Upon successful completion of the provisional period, Morrisville State will be a candidate for full accreditation as a member of the NCAA.

Morrisville State College offers more than 75 bachelor and associate degrees and options. Considered to be one of the most technologically advanced colleges in the nation for its ThinkPad University program and wireless technology initiative, the college recently became the first in the nation to comprehensively replace landlines in residence halls with individual cellular phones. Morrisville State College was also chosen as one of the top five colleges in the nation for campus activities by Campus Activities magazine.

The Morrisville State College Norwich Campus offers associate degree programs in accounting, business, computer systems technology, office administration, liberal arts transfer, nursing, early childhood, criminal justice and human services to south central New York residents and employers. Students may also apply coursework to other associate or bachelor degrees at the main campus.
