Internship Benefits
- Internships give students the ability to explore potential career paths while gaining valuable hands-on experience.
- Internships complement and enrich a student's academic program by helping to connect classroom theory with its application in a business, government, or non-profit agency environment.
- Internships can increase student readiness for paid employment and often lead directly to employment with the sponsoring organization.
- Internships are tailored to meet students' academic and career learning objectives.
Internship Checklist
- Eligibility
If you are interested in an internship, you must:
- Be a matriculated Morrisville State College student
- Have completed a minimum of 12 credits
- Have a GPA of 2.75 or above
- Academic Preparedness and Fit
Questions to ask:
- Do I have an appropriate academic background for an internship?
- Will an internship fit into my academic plan?
- Do I have enough time to complete an internship (1 credit = 45 hours)?
Action steps to take:
- Meet with your academic advisor to discuss how an internship will fit into your academic plan.
- Choosing an Internship Site
Questions to ask:
- Where do I want to intern?
- How can an internship help me meet my career objectives?
Action steps to take:
- Obtain an Internship Application from the Internship Coordinator (or online), complete application, and return to the Internship Coordinator along with a copy of your resume. Be sure to keep a copy of the application for your records.
- Meet with the Internship Coordinator to discuss internship site(s)
- Interviewing for an Internship
Once you have made a decision about where you would like to intern, contact the organization (in writing, in person, or over the phone) and:
- Identify yourself as a Norwich Campus student
- State your interest in an internship
- Ask for an interview to discuss the possibility
- Preparing for the Internship
Once you have been accepted at an internship site, you will need to:
- Complete the Student-Sponsor Intern Contract and Internship Learning Objectives Agreement and return them to the Internship Coordinator
- Complete the paperwork to officially register for the class
- During the Internship
Action steps to take:
- Keep a journal and submit entries to Internship Coordinator on a regular basis
- Document your hours using a carbon-copied timesheet
- Meet with the Site Supervisor and Internship Coordinator regularly
- After the Internship
Action steps to take:
- Submit your journal and final paper to the Internship Coordinator
- Present your paper to a small group of faculty, staff, and students
- Complete a Student Intern Evaluation Form
- Meet with your Site Supervisor and Internship Coordinator to review the Student Internship Performance Evaluation
- Write a thank you note to your site supervisor and/or the business/organization that sponsored you as an intern
