Biography for Dr. Raymond W. Cross
Raymond W. Cross, Ph.D.
Morrisville State College President Ray Cross, Ph.D. joined Morrisville State College in April, 1998.
Previously, as president and CEO of Northwest Technical College in Minnesota, Cross was responsible for the leadership, supervision, planning, operation and performance of the five-campus college. During his tenure, he chaired the Chancellor's Special Advisory Group on Governance and Support Services which led to the merger of 10 community and technical colleges within the state.
He has a Ph.D. from Michigan State University, an M.S. from Central Michigan University, and a B.S. from Ferris State University. He served as Head of the Engineering Technologies Department at Ferris State University in Michigan, and extensively worked in and consulted for the auto industry.
Since his inauguration, Cross has guided Morrisville State College through a period of growth, adding facilities and programs, integrating technology and entrepreneurship in academics and re-emphasizing the college’s historical strengths in agriculture and technology.
Cross implemented an initiative to integrate technology into the college culture. Morrisville State College took a pioneering role in higher education by integrating mobile learning via laptops, wireless technology and cellular phones to allow students to work and learn at the location best suited for them.
Under Cross’s direction, the college has increased its bachelor degree offerings in specialized niche areas. The construction of several new facilities which function as real world learning laboratories and a move from junior college to NCAA Division III athletic competition have added to Morrisville’s development into a baccalaureate institution.
Cross has leveraged the college’s roots in agricultural and technical programs, becoming a leading proponent of using New York agricultural feedstocks to develop biofuels. He has also made rural entrepreneurship a priority at the college with the development of an agri-business center, small-scale food processing plant and entrepreneurship institute.
He serves on several local boards of directors and SUNY-wide committees, and was the chairman of the Agriculture Committee for New York State Governor Eliot Spitzer’s transition team.
Cross was born and raised on a small dairy farm in Michigan. He and his wife, Miriam, have four children and four grandchildren. They live in Morrisville.
