Office Administration - Office Management A.A.S.
Proficiency exams are offered to students who wish to test out of various keyboarding courses based on their high school coursework and/or office experiences. Up to four credit hours may be earned by taking the keyboarding proficiency exams at the beginning of each course offering. Students may create flexibility in their schedules and concentrate on other courses by opting out of courses in which they are already proficient. Proficiency testing provides the college credit that students need to progress toward their degree. Students do not need to attend class once they pass these exams.
State Exams and Certifications (exams and certifications are relevant to type of A.A.S. degree within the Office Administration curriculum that students are enrolled in – see advisor for more information.)
New York State Civil Service Examinations
While enrolled at Morrisville State College, students are introduced to and complete a sample New York State Civil Service Examinations in the Office Administration Orientation class in the fall (first) semester. Many NYS office administration-type jobs require prospective employees to have successfully passed a variety of civil service exams. Being aware of these types of exams and completing sample exams early on within their academics, allows students to be aware of a variety of skills they will learn throughout their studies at Morrisville State College and realize how those skills will ensure they successfully pass these required exams.
Many State office jobs fill their positions through the Civil Service process, guided by the New York State Civil Service Law, which is in place to ensure that the hiring process is competitive and fair. The City uses employment examinations to measure a potential candidate’s merit and fitness for a particular title. In most instances, taking an exam is the beginning of a hiring process that may lead to employment with the State. Classes taken at Morrisville State’s Office Administration A.A.S. program ensure proper skills that students need to pass these exams.
Certified Administrative Professional (CAP) Examination
Professors within the Office Administration department at Morrisville State College belong to IAAP (International Administrative Assistants Professionals) – Syracuse, New York chapter. Being members of this organization allows professors to network with administrative assistants throughout NYS and gain current industry trends and other information to bring back to the classroom. Many courses students take through their studies in an Office Administration program at Morrisville State College reinforce the principles set forth in the CAPP Exam. As stated on the following website, (http://www.iaap-hq.org/certification), “The Institute for Certification believes that a top-level administrative professional should have basic knowledge of office systems, technology, office administration, and management, and know how to apply the principles of good human relations and communications. Some of the examinations are based on knowledge acquired by the office professional through formal education and informal reading. Employers also expect their administrative assistants to be thoroughly familiar with current techniques in office practice and procedures and aware of developments in office systems and technology.”
