Journalism Studies A.A.

An internship in the communications industry often gives students the best opportunity to gain entry to a professional career. Through the established networks and industry contacts of the faculty, the best placements can be made for Journalism students at Morrisville State College.

Journalism students have earned internship positions at the following media, advertising and public relations outlets and many more:

  • The Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science and Technology (MOST), Syracuse
  • The Syracuse Post-Standard
  • The Oneida Daily Dispatch
  • The Utica Observer-Dispatch
  • The Clinton Courier
  • The Hamilton Tribune
  • The Cazenovia Republican
  • The Norwich Evening Sun
  • The Binghamton Press & Sun Bulletin
  • CNN-SI, Atlanta
  • KABC-TV, Los Angeles
  • WTVH-TV, Syracuse
  • WSTM-TV, Syracuse
  • WIXT-TV, Syracuse
  • WUTR-TV, Utica
  • WPTZ -TV, Plattsburgh
  • WNTQ-FM, Syracuse
  • WBBS-FM, Syracuse
  • WMCR-AM, Oneida
  • K-Rock, Utica/Rome
  • Mark Russell & Associates, Syracuse
  • SportsChannel, Charlotte, NC
  • Fox Sports, Albany, NY

An exciting accomplishment during the Spring 1997 semester was the acceptance of an internship proposal with CNN-SI, in Atlanta, and other CNN national bureaus. Generally, CNN only accepts applicants who are of the junior or senior academic rank. During the summer of 1998 WCVM Faculty Advisor Gladys Cleland participated in a faculty internship in Atlanta and, while in residence there, worked to solidify an articulation agreement on behalf of all prospective Journalism student interns.

Prof. Cleland has also established and placed students within the NASCAR television circuit at Speed Channel in Charlotte, NC, and FOX Sports, in Albany, NY, and Atlanta.

Internship Criteria for CHIMES and Photography students include:

  • The approval of the advisor

Internship Criteria for WCVM Production Lab students include:

  • GPA of 2.5 or better
  • Two semesters spent working at WCVM
  • One of the following elective courses: Broadcast Management, News and Promotion, or Advertising Strategies
  • An endorsement letter from the broadcasting faculty members submitted with the student's application. The endorsement will be written and forwarded following consultation with the student's academic advisor
