Course Description

General Biology I

This course provides the first half of a typical two-semester sequence for biology-related majors. Topics in this part of the sequence are: organization of life, chemistry of living things (including cellular respiration and photosynthesis), cell biology and biological membranes, heredity and reproduction (including mitosis, meiosis and Mendelian genetics), molecular genetics, evolution and ecology. The lab covers a variety of procedures and microscopic studies applied to selected animals and plants. A variety of laboratory techniques and procedures relative to the study of selected plants, animals and microbes is also covered. Prerequisite: Placement in BIOL 120 or higher or successful completion of BIOL 105 with at least a C-. 4 credits (3 lecture hours, 2 laboratory hours), fall or spring semester This course satisfies SUNY General Education Requirements for “Natural Sciences”. These credits count toward the Math and/or Science (List B) requirements for graduation.

Admissions Requirements

Students wishing to enter this program must meet the following requirements:
Minimum SAT scores of 500 in math and 450 in critical reading.

Desired: Math through pre-calculus and general chemistry.
