"Oh No, You Didn't!" - Why Patients Keep Breaking Restorations Nothing can be more frustrating than spending time restoring a patient’s teeth and having them repeatedly fracture them. This course goes back to basic occlusal concepts to try to understand why restorations fail and how to predict mishaps before they occur.
After completing the course, you will:
1. be able to identify causes of fractures and excessive wear
2. be familiar with why patients drift into unhealthy positions anterior to centric occlusion
3. understand the concept of Neutral Zone and explain why teeth are positioned where they are
4. see abfraction lesions as signs of larger occlusal problems
5. realize the disastrous results of missing molars, and know how to communicate that to patients
6. differentiate between horizontal and vertical envelopes of motion and their significance.

Artificial Ears, Tears, Teeth, and Saliva: New Approaches to Overcoming 'Dry Mouth' Xerostomia continues to challenge research groups seeking a longer lasting and more effective therapy. Current Biomaterials and bioengineering research at UB is addressing these challenges from four (4) complimentary approaches: (1) overcoming the “foreign bodyreaction” that prevents stimulating electrodes from activating gland secretions for longer periods; (2) examining systems that have been proven superior in developing “artificial tears”, and may also work in the oral cavity; (3) developing better biodegradable implants to deliver stimulatory drugs; and (4) inventing “artificial saliva” that lasts more than 4 hours each time.
Benefits of Attending
Attendees will be brought to the “frontier” of active, current research attempting to solve one of the most intractable problems in oral health maintenance: dealing with “dry mouth”. Work in progress by recent and current UB graduate students will be shared with the participants, drawing from concepts already seeing success with cochlear implants, ophthalmic preparations, restorable implants and lubricious formulations.
Course Objectives
1. Identify the main challenge in utilizing stimulatory implanted electrodes
2. Recognize similarities in the lucrication needs of eyes and oral mucosa
3. Appreciate the advantages of “plasma” sterilization for restorable implants
4. Identify superior lubricity in marketed over-the-counter “dry mouth” products

Porcelain Veneers Porcelain veneers are the cornerstone restoration of many smile makeovers, and knowing how to provide them in an efficient and profitable way can mean the difference between thriving and just surviving. But watch out - the Internet has allowed patients just enough knowledge to be dangerous - to us! What do you tell the C4 patient who wants a brighter smile but demands Lumineers? How about the malposed case that refuses orthodontics but requests improved alignment? Are porcelain veneers right for these cases? This will depend on variables such as occlusion, existing restorations, tooth color, patient age and other factors, as well as the goals of treatment for the case.
Benefits of Attending
The introduction of new porcelains and the return of some older techniques, coupled with heavy marketing to the general public, create an environment that can be confusing to practitioners as well as patients. Learn what porcelain veneers can and cannot do for your patient and your practice.
Course Objectives
On completion of the course you should be able to case select and treatment plan any case for porcelain veneer restoration, whether single or multiple units are indicated. Furthermore, you will gain a complete understanding of preparation, placement and finishing techniques.
