New Products & Techniques That Make Sense The profession of dentistry is a health profession first but it is also a business. Similar to other businesses, dentists should periodically evaluate daily operational efficiencies and the efficacies of the treatments they offer. This presentation will review techniques and new materials that produce improved patient outcomes and at the same time reduce operator stress and save time.
Local anesthetics: better techniques for producing comfortable patients. A new material for completing pit and fissure sealants, which seals better and can be applied to a saliva contaminated surface. Sleep apnea: health significance and dental solutions. Broken teeth: How to temporize quickly and with little effort. A new fiber post system and enamel repair via re-mineralization.
This presentation will review office expenses and how the dentist can reduce chair time and ultimately improve patient treatment outcomes. New materials and techniques will be reviewed and compared with traditional treatments to provide justification to try these recommendations. Sometimes, certain products may cost more but their savings in time can make them a better choice. Additionally, new data on re-mineralization will show how early enamel demineralizations can be reversed.

Tobacco Counseling (Role of Dental Team in Helping Smokers Quit) It is demonstrated in clinical research that tobacco use is the greatest risk factor for the initiation and/or progression of oral diseases in particular periodontal disease. However, when it comes to dental practice, tobacco use is not addressed in the treatment plan. This leads to growing gap between clinical research and clinical practice. Also, prognosis does not depend only on the severity of the disease, but rather on risk factors such as smoking, that is associated with periodontal disease. It is the goal of the dental profession to help individuals achieve and maintain maximum oral health throughout their lives. So, risk factors such as smoking must be addressed in the treatment plan. Tobacco use should be considered a dental problem that must be addressed in the dental treatment plan. And tobacco counseling for smokers should be part of contemporary dental treatment plan.
This 3 hour course will cover the epidemiology of tobacco use, it’s chemical ingredients, role of nicotine in addiction, effect of tobacco use on oral diseases, role of dental team in helping tobacco users to quit through counseling and new medications. Also the new guidelines of tobacco counseling that were presented by the 2008 US Surgeon General report will be discussed.
