Date: February 16, 2018
Time: 2:00 PM
Location: Student Activities Building

"“WiFM (What’s in it for me): Can use of the N- and B- word be empowering?” uses Hip-Hop/Rap music to explore rac(ISM), sex(ISM) and homophobia.
Artists are discussed that use the N- and B- word to question how language with historical connotations used inside of groups can be positive and negative. Participants evaluate the pros and cons of, “codified” language and the ability of words to define communities, impact perception and create social allies. Dr. Merriday is a highly skilled facilitator who has the capacity to unpack, “difference”, increase cultural literacy and engage students using Hip-Hop/Rap and popular culture as a lens. The educational outcomes of this session include: 1) increasing cultural awareness; 2) enabling understanding, tolerance and appreciation of difference; and 3) strengthening the capacity of students to have conversations about hot topics with sensitivity and cultural competency. Dr. Merriday received her M.A. from Temple University in Sociology, M.Sc. from the London School of Economics and Political Science in Development Management and Ph.D. from Temple University in African-American Studies."
