Morrisville State College unveils new athletic logo, celebrates move to NCAA Division III competition

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. -- Coming soon, Morrisville State College athletic teams will be sporting a new look.

To commemorate the Athletic Department’s impending move to NCAA Division III competition in the fall, Morrisville State College has redesigned its athletic logo. The new Mustangs logo, designed by the college’s graphic designer, Bill Goloski, features the profile of a streamlined, fierce-looking mustang. The diamond shape of the logo coordinates with Morrisville State College’s logo, the letter “M” superimposed onto a green diamond.

Students, faculty and staff are rallying behind the new logo.

“I think it’s a great look for Morrisville State College athletics,” Terry Dow, Morrisville State College’s head football coach, said. “It appropriately reflects the strength and character of our programs. This will provide a great start as we begin NCAA competition in August.”

Morrisville State College will enter the NCAA as a provisional member during the 2006-07 academic year, fielding 17 varsity teams. Upon successful completion of this four-year period, the college will be a candidate for full accreditation. Morrisville State College previously competed in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

Greg Carroll, the college’s director of athletics, said the college community is looking forward to the transition to NCAA Division III play.

“There is a definite buzz—student-athletes, their families, our coaching and support staff, faculty, staff and administration—everyone realizes that we are getting ready to turn the page to a new and exciting chapter of athletics at Morrisville State College,” he said. “Our teams have had a long history of success in the NJCAA; we’re eager to translate that success to a different athletic conference.”

In accordance with NCAA regulations, provisional members are not allowed to be affiliated with any conference or participate in championship tournaments during the first two years of the provisional period. The Athletic Department is in the process of scheduling competition for next year. Future opponents include members of the SUNYAC (State University of New York Athletic Conference) as well as Vassar College, Skidmore College, Green Mountain College and Elmira College.
