Morrisville State football upsets Brockport with 20-19 win

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Morrisville State College (2-6) football handed visiting SUNY Brockport (3-5) a 20-19 loss, upsetting the Golden Eagles Saturday afternoon in Morrisville.

Morrisville State took the 20-13 lead midway through the fourth quarter before SUNY Brockport responded with a nine play, 50-yard drive to bring the game within one with just 43 seconds remaining. Brockport’s extra kick attempt by Troy Dehm (Mendon, NY/ Honeoye Falls-Lima) proved to be the deciding factor in the contest as the kick sailed to the right of the upright, giving Morrisville State the 20-19 edge with seconds remaining in the contest.

Morrisville State took the first lead in the contest late in the first quarter as William Carter (Syracuse, NY/Henninger) carried the ball for the one-yard score with 1:39 remaining in the first.

Playing to a scoreless second quarter, Brockport took the lead at 11:52 in the third, as Matt McCormick (Peru, NY/ Peru) completed the 63-yard drive with a seven yard scoring run, giving the Golden Eagles the 7-6 edge. McCormick recorded 173 yards on 27 carries and two scores on the afternoon for Brockport.

With 3:43 remaining, McCormick added his second score, extending the Eagle lead to seven, capping off an 11-play, 75-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown run.

Morrisville State evened the contest early in the fourth as Ahmad Burks (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) carried the ball seven yards for the score.

Forcing a fourth down on the visitors 13-yard line, Brockport fumbled the punt and Morrisville State’s Bryant Parker (Windsor, NY/Windsor) covered the ball at the one yard line, setting up the go-ahead rushing score by Mustang quarterback Billy Poling (Waretown, N/Southern Regional). Derek Mulson (Rensselaer, NY/LaSalle) completed the kick, giving the Mustangs the 20-13 lead.

Poling was 9-of-16 for 86-yards while carrying the ball for 50 and a score. Carter added 46 on the ground with 17 carries.

Nick Savignano (Latham, NY/Shaker) led the Mustangs with 13 total tackles, three for a loss of 11 yards as Parker added 12, three for a loss of 21.

Dale Buck (Oakfield, NY/ Oakfield-Alabama) led the Golden Eagles with 12 total tackles, including a sack. Jarrett Woodfork (Syracuse, NY/ Bishop Ludden) added ten in the Brockport defensive efforts.

Morrisville State returns to the field at Mount Ida College on Saturday at 12 p.m. in Boston. Brockport travels to Newport News (Apprentice), game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Morrisville State enters its second year as a provisional member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Division III in 2007. Upon successful completion of the provisional period, Morrisville State will be a candidate for full accreditation as a member of the NCAA.

Morrisville State College offers more than 70 bachelor and associate degrees. Considered to be one of the most technologically advanced colleges in the nation for its ThinkPad University program and wireless technology initiative, the college recently became the first in the nation to comprehensively replace landlines in residence halls with individual cellular phones. The Morrisville State College Norwich Campus also offers programs in business, technologies, liberal arts/education transfer, and nursing to Chenango County area residents and employers.
