Morrisville State ties Oswego State with extra-man goal in final second of regulation

OSWEGO, NY – Sophomore forward Rob Sgarabossa (Campbellville, ONT) tipped in a pass from junior defender Evan Kernohan (Minden, ONT) on the extra-man advantage with one second remaining in regulation to give help Morrisville State College play to a 5-5 overtime draw with sixth-ranked Oswego State in a SUNYAC men’s hockey contest at the SUNY Oswego Campus Center Ice Arena.

The goal came as the Mustangs (0-6-1 overall, 0-4-1 SUNYAC), trailing 5-4, called timeout with 46 seconds remaining in the third period, then pulled starting goaltender Calyn Relkoff (Grand Forks, BC) for the final 37 seconds of the period for the extra attacker. Four different players scored goals for Morrisville, with freshman Geoff Matzel (Chittenango, NY) tallying a goal and two assists, and freshman defender Tom Longland (Dunville, ONT) and Kernohan registering two assists each.

Five different players tallied goals for the Lakers (5-1-1, 3-0-1 SUNYAC), with senior forward Brendan McLaughlin (Brampton, ONT) registering a goal and an assists. His power-play goal at 14:24 of the third period, assisted by classmate Ryan Ellis (Georgetown, Ont.) gave Oswego a 5-4 lead.

Relkoff played 64:23 in goal, making 31 saves (Including eight in the overtime), while Oswego senior goalie Chris Hyk (Hamilton, Ont.) stopped 28 shots (all in regulation) in 64:59.

Oswego State jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals from freshman Eric Selleck at 8:27 (assisted by Peter Magagna) and Ellis at 10:39 (McLaughlin and Jared Anderson assisting) before Morrisville scored its first goal of the game on a slap shot from the right side from junior Andrew Alaire (Carlisle, ONT).
