Morrisville State women fall short against Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Senior Maggie Byrne (Pearl River/Albertus Magnus) scored 17 points, including 5-of-5 shooting from three-point range, as Cortland defeated visiting Morrisville, 63-49. The Red Dragons are 6-1 overall and 2-0 in SUNYAC play. Morrisville is 1-4 and 0-2.

Junior Jessica Laing (Bloomville/South Kortright) added 13 points and 12 rebounds and sophomore Jennifer Patten (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford) scored a career-high 13 points and made three steals. Senior Ali Canale (Oswego) contributed seven points, six rebounds and four assists.

Sybil Stanton (Walton) led the visiting Mustangs with 14 points and six rebounds. She made 4-of-6 three-pointers. Tekesha Hanson (Queens/John Bowne) recorded 13 points and six rebounds and Eboy Whitfield (Benton Harbor, MI) totaled 10 points, nine rebounds and five blocked shots.

Morrisville led once at 3-0 on a Stanton trey in the first minute, but Cortland scored 13 of the next 15 points and never trailed again. Byrne scored 11 points in that run, but committed her second foul with 15:24 left and sat out the rest of the half.

Cortland led 32-21 at halftime and led by as much as 23 points at 61-38 in the second half. Morrisville finished the game on an 11-2 run over the final four minutes.
