Fredonia squeaks by Morrisville State hockey for 5-4 win

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The visiting SUNY Fredonia Blue Devils squeaked by with a conference win Friday night, defeating host Morrisville State College by a 5-4 final in Morrisville.

Fredonia took the 1-0 lead at 15:17 in the first period off a score from Bryan Ross (Livonia, MI) on the first power play opportunity for the Blue Devils of the night. Matt Pfalzer (Getzville, NY) and Bryan Goudy (Port Huron, MI) were credited with the assists.

In the second, Billy Sanborn (Monroe, NY) extended the lead to two for Fredonia, netting the goal off an assist from Jordan Oye (Richmond, BC) and Alex Morton (Cannington, ONT) at 5:13. With less than six minutes remaining in the period, Oye gave the Blue Devils the three goal cushion, netting a power play score at 14:31 off a pass from Steve Rizer (Smithtown, NY) and Sanborn.

Within a span of a minute and a half, Morrisville State evened the contest at three, netting the first score of the night at 16:18 on the 5-on-3 power play advantage. Rob Sgarbossa (Campbellville, ONT) and Kyle Roberts (Whitesboro, NY) found Bobby Cass (Burlington, ONT) for the one touch goal. Forty-eight seconds later, Keith Williams (Whitesboro, NY) netted the second Mustang power play score of the night, off a pass from Dana Calderone (Bronx, NY) and Brent Quinn (Perth, ONT).

Calderone tied it at three at 17:48 off a deflection pass from Garrett Leigh (New Hartford, NY).

In the third, Fredonia quickly regained the lead, netting a score 43 seconds into the period as Oye and Sanborn found Chris de Bruyn (Calgary, AB) for the go ahead score.

Goudy regained the two goal lead for the Blue Devils at 4:43, netting the score off an assist from James Muscatello (Baldwinsville, NY).

Geoff Matzell (Chittenango, NY) brought Morrisville State to within one, netting the third Mustang power play goal of the night at 13:12 but Fredonia held on to claim the conference win. Tim Dorak (Honeoye, NY) and Quinn were credited with the assists.

Pat Street (Annapolis, MD) recorded the win in net, saving 27 as the Blue Devils improved to 5-12-5 overall, 3-7-4 in SUNYAC action.

Morrisville State’s Caylin Relkoff (Grand Forks, BC) recorded the loss for the Mustangs, saving 30 in 46:58 minutes of play. Mike Will (Lewes, ENG) saved seven in the final 13:02, while allowing no goals against.

Morrisville State returns to the ice tomorrow night at 7 p.m. hosting Buffalo State College for the 2008-09 season finale in the Morrisville State College Iceplex.

Morrisville State enters its third year as a provisional member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Division III in 2008. Upon successful completion of the provisional period, Morrisville State will be a candidate for full accreditation as a member of the NCAA.

Morrisville State College offers more than 75 bachelor and associate degrees and options. Considered to be one of the most technologically advanced colleges in the nation for its ThinkPad University program and wireless technology initiative, the college recently became the first in the nation to comprehensively replace landlines in residence halls with individual cellular phones. The Morrisville State College Norwich Campus offers associate degree programs in accounting, business, computer systems technology, office administration, liberal arts transfer, nursing, early childhood, criminal justice and human services to south central New York residents and employers. Students may also apply coursework to other associate or bachelor degrees at the main campus.
