Morrisville State wrestling places fourth at Scranton Duals

SCRANTON, PA – The Morrisville State College wrestling team placed fourth at the University of Scranton duals Saturday afternoon, as they opened the 2009 season.

Morrisville State opened with a 29-13 match loss to Penn State Dubois in which three wrestlers posted individual wins. Justin DeLamothe (Cross River, NY) pinned Brandon Wiser in 2:30 in the 133 point weight class, and Spencer Brady (Centereach, NY) followed with a 5-2 decision over Bish in the 165 pound weight class. At 184, Wheeler Brunschmid (Sherburne, NY) recorded a 17-4 major decision over Ryan Terwilliger for the win.

Against American International, Brady and Brunschmid each recorded wins in the 34-12 loss to AIC. Brady recorded the 7-6 decision over Babatida Faguyi at 157, while Brunschmid posted a 7-3 decision over CJ Chaika at 184.

Six Mustangs posted team points in Morrisville State’s 33-12 win over Scranton (B), starting with Joseph Lanza (Herkimer, NY) in the 125 pound weight class with a 6-0 decision over Javitz. Brady picked up his third win of the afternoon with a 10-8 decision over Mike Bonomo at 157 and Sam Taylor (Cazenovia, NY) pinned Jake Oliviera in 2:14 for his first win of the day.

DeLamothe, Brunschmid, Henry Petry (Waverly, NY) and Sam O’Donnell (Cortland, NY) each recorded a forfeit in their respective classes.

In the final match of the afternoon, Morrisville State competed against Scranton (A) for third place and fell by a 31-10 decision, claiming fourth overall. Josiah Parker defeated Paul Rajan in the 165 pound weight class by a 5-2 decision and Zachary McCutcheon (Waverly, NY) followed with an 8-5 decision over Matthew Terry at 174 pounds. Brunschmid posted a 13-4 major decision over Nick Genovese at 184.

Apprentice was first overall in team standings on the day, followed by American International and Scranton. Morrisville State claimed fourth, Penn State-Dubois was fifth and Scranton (B) sixth.

Morrisville State returns to the mats next Saturday at the Ithaca College Bomber Invitational. Wrestling begins at 9 a.m.

Morrisville State begins active membership within the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Division III in 2009-10 and is eligible for NCAA Championship Tournament play.

Morrisville State College offers more than 75 bachelor and associate degrees and options. Considered to be one of the most technologically advanced colleges in the nation for its ThinkPad University program and wireless technology initiative, the college recently became the first in the nation to comprehensively replace landlines in residence halls with individual cellular phones. Morrisville State College was also chosen as one of the top five colleges in the nation for campus activities by Campus Activities magazine.

The Morrisville State College Norwich Campus offers associate degree programs in accounting, business, computer systems technology, office administration, liberal arts transfer, nursing, early childhood, criminal justice and human services to south central New York residents and employers. Students may also apply coursework to other associate or bachelor degrees at the main campus.
