Morrisville State's season ends in quarterfinal round of ECAC Mid-Atlantic Men's Lacrosse Tournament

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Morrisville State College’s men’s lacrosse “Cinderella” season came to an end Wednesday night in the quarterfinal round of the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Tournament, as rival Medaille College held on for the 10-9 victory over the Mustangs to advance in tournament action.

Morrisville State concludes the 2010 season with a program best 13-4 overall record. Medaille improves to 9-8 overall and will face top seed Kean University on Saturday in Union, New Jersey.

Medaille came out of the gates on fire, taking a 4-0 lead over the Mustangs after the first quarter and adding a fifth score early in the second for the five goal advantage, before Tim Bobbett (Cazenovia, NY) finally put Morrisville State on the board with a score minutes before the halftime period.

In the third, Morrisville State quickly gained momentum, outscoring the Mavericks 5-1 to even the contest at six heading into the final quarter.

Matt Dunkle (Hamburg, NY) regained the lead for Medaille at the 12:22 mark in the fourth and Thomas Owens (Cazenovia, NY) evened it for the Mustangs 30 seconds later, before Tyler Strassburg (West Seneca, NY) netted two straight for the two goal Maverick cushion.

Joe Glieco (Williamsville, NY) netted his second of the night with 2:47 remaining for the three goal advantage for Medaille, before Owens cut it to two with 1:49 to go.

Bobbett added another score with 50 seconds remaining, but Medaille gained possession on the ensuing face-off, taking time off the clock.

With seconds remaining, Morrisville State forced a turnover and had possession in their offensive zone, where a last second effort sailed wide of the net and Medaille earned the 10-9 victory.

Strassburg scored five goals and Glieco added two others to lead the Mavericks past the Mustangs. Joe Kozovski (Ajax, ON), Jim Luthart (Amherst, NY) and Dunkle each netted one. Luthart added two assists to his tallies on the night.

Jordan Ellis (Orchard Park, NY) collected the win in net, making nine stops for the Mavericks.

Morrisville State’s Owens led the Mustangs in scoring, netting three goals and assisting another with Bobbett adding three scores. Adam Lewis (Painted Post, NY), Andrew Stein (Oswego, NY) and Tom Longland (Dunnville, ON) each added one, rounding out Morrisville State scoring.

Michael Hinchey (Kingston, NY) recorded 15 saves between the pipes.

Medaille held the 43-35 advantage in shots and edged Morrisville 42-33 in ground balls, while winning 15-of-22 face-offs on the night.

Morrisville State College offers more than 80 bachelor and associate degrees and options. Considered to be one of the most technologically advanced colleges in the nation for its ThinkPad University program and wireless technology initiative, the college recently became the first in the nation to comprehensively replace landlines in residence halls with individual cellular phones. Morrisville State College was also chosen as one of the top five colleges in the nation for campus activities by Campus Activities magazine.

The Morrisville State College Norwich Campus offers associate degree programs in accounting, business, computer systems technology, office administration, liberal arts transfer, nursing, early childhood, criminal justice and human services to south central New York residents and employers. Students may also apply coursework to other associate or bachelor degrees at the main campus.
