Cruz, Gomez lead Morrisville State wrestling at Ithaca Invitational

ITHACA, N.Y. – Freshman Jose Cruz (Syracuse, NY/Fowler) and sophomore Bryan Gomez (Suffern, NY/Suffern) placed fourth and fifth respectively to lead Morrisville State College at the Ithaca College Bomber Invitational Sunday afternoon in Ithaca.

Cruz posted a 4-2 record at the invitational in the 184 pound weight class. In the first round, Cruz pinned Ollie Ferraro of Hunter in 1:56 before recording his second pin of the afternoon in the second round over Ryan DeWolfe of Roger Williams University. In the third round, Cruz posted a 5-3 upset over top seed Nick Coleman of NYU (currently ranked second in the nation). Joey Scott (Hunter) tallied a 12-8 victory in the fourth round to send Cruz to the consolation round where he posted a 13-7 win over Jim Tomczuk of TCNJ before falling to Coleman 7-2 for the fourth place finish.

At 174 pounds, Gomez recorded a 3-2 record, posting a 11-1 first round win over Jared Teal of Oswego. In the second round, Gomez handed Tom Delesia of Cortland a 9-3 loss before Andre DeCristo of Hunter defeated Gomez 5-2. In the consolation round, Corey Barber of Cortland defeated Gomez 11-0 before Gomez recorded a medical forfeit win over Greg Osgoodby of TCNJ for the fifth place finish.

In other weight classes, Will Allen (Boonville, NY/Adirondack) went 3-2 at 125 pounds while teammates Vito Argese (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus), Mike Castillo (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy), Mike Smith (Central Square, NY/PV Moore) and Josh Tripp (Peru, NY/Peru) each posted a 1-2 record. Joe Lanza (Herkimer, NY/Herkimer) and Chris Stobie (Phelps, NY/Midlakes) each went 0-2.

At 133 pounds, Aljamain Sterling (Uniondale, NY/Uniondale) posted a 2-2 record while teammates Matt Aird (North Babylon, NY/North Babylon) and Brett Buell (Earlville, NY/Sherburne-Earlville) each went 0-2 at 149 pounds.

Brandon Olsen (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) record one win and two losses at 157 while Dan Rudy (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) went 4-2 at 165, recording a pin and two significant point wins.

Jahi Chandler (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) went 0-2 in the 174 pound weight class while Nick Frantz (Pine grove, PA/Pine Grove) went 0-2 at 197.

In the heavyweight class Dave Columbo (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) went 2-2 while teammates Jameson Lawton (Homer, NY/Homer Central) and James Lamonica (Staten Island, NY/Msgr Farrell) went 1-2 and 0-2 respectively.

Morrisville State tallied 59.5 team points for the 13th place finish. The College of New Jersey won the invitational with 166.5 points.

Morrisville State returns to the mats Saturday, November 10 at the Kings College Monarch Invite.

Morrisville State enters its second year as a provisional member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Division III in 2007. Upon successful completion of the provisional period, Morrisville State will be a candidate for full accreditation as a member of the NCAA.

Morrisville State College offers more than 70 bachelor and associate degrees. Considered to be one of the most technologically advanced colleges in the nation for its ThinkPad University program and wireless technology initiative, the college recently became the first in the nation to comprehensively replace landlines in residence halls with individual cellular phones. Morrisville State College was also chosen as one of the top five colleges in the nation for campus activities by Campus Activities magazine. The Morrisville State College Norwich Campus also offers programs in business, technologies, liberal arts/education transfer, and nursing to Chenango County area residents and employers.
