Morrisville State College Welcomes Students During Welcome Weekend, Academic Welcome Ceremony

MORRISVILLE, N.Y.¬— The Morrisville State College campus will be a flurry of activity as it welcomes a new class of freshman and transfer and returning students during Welcome Weekend Aug. 20-22. Classes begin Aug. 23 at the Morrisville and Norwich campuses.

Welcome Weekend is an opportunity for students to become familiar or reacquaint themselves with the campus and all it has to offer.

The Morrisville and Norwich campuses will welcome more than 1,450 freshmen and transfer students, some hailing from as far as Burma, South Korea, China, Japan and Canada, in addition to returning students.

Activities scheduled throughout the weekend at the Morrisville campus include check-in for new students, an array of informational sessions, luncheons, a bingo and pizza party, and classroom tours. Students can also stop by the John W. Stewart Center for Student Activities (STUAC) gym to register to win a pair of tickets to see Sugarland on September 4 at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown.

Laptop and cellular phones will also be distributed during Welcome Weekend and new students will receive training in how to use them.

A fire safety, mock residence hall burn will be held on Sunday, Aug. 22 at 1 p.m. in the academic quad in front of Marshall Hall.

Among the new highlights students are encouraged to check out this semester are an impressive new stadium and athletic field, and construction which continues on the Sheila Johnson Design Center.

On Aug. 31, new students on the Morrisville State College campus will be greeted by faculty, staff and Ray Cross, college president, during an Academic Welcome Ceremony.

The unique event, which will be held at 1 p.m. in Hamilton Hall, is the revival of a college tradition (formerly called convocation) to bond students with faculty and celebrate students’ new academic beginning.

Morrisville State College, considered to be one of the most technologically advanced colleges in the nation for its ThinkPad University program and wireless technology initiatives, offers more than 80 bachelor and associate degrees and options.

The Morrisville State College Norwich Campus offers associate degree programs in accounting, business, computer systems technology, office administration, liberal arts transfer, nursing, early childhood, criminal justice and human services to south central New York residents and employers. Students may also apply coursework to other associate or bachelor degrees at the Morrisville campus.
