The Morrisville State College men’s soccer team was defeated by nationally ranked #6 Carnegie Mellon University in the first round of NCAA Tournament action, 3-0, Saturday evening in Pittsburgh.
Carnegie Mellon controlled the ball for much of the first half, but the Mustang defense, led by freshman goalkeeper Rob Larkin, held strong and fought to keep the Tartans off the board. Morrisville State created a few outstanding scoring opportunities, including a one on one with the goalkeeper, but was unable to convert.
The Tartans came out even stronger in the second half, scoring twice in the first five minutes. Chris Wysocki scored first for Carnegie Mellon when he collected a pass from Scott Gerfen deep in the box and placed it past Larkin. John Crawshaw scored next after Mike Ferraco crossed the ball into the box from the left side where Crawshaw was able to one-time it into the back of the net. Brandon Peck added the final goal for the Tartans at 70:17 from a Connor Webb pass.
The Mustangs struggled to create opportunities and were outshot by the Tartans 5 to 21. Rob Larkin (Clinton, N.Y.) recorded the loss for Morrisville State tallying five saves, while Christopher Madden and Jacob Rice shared time in net for the Tartans, earning the win. Both recorded two saves.
Morrisville State College concludes their record breaking season 15-5-1.
