Students should login to the Housing Portal to complete the Housing Release Request Form if they are seeking to be released from SUNY Morrisville's residency requirement. As a reminder all first and second year students are required to live on campus unless they meet one of the criteria outlined by the College Council. For more information on the Residency Requirement, you should refer to Article IV, Section 8 of the College Council Rules.
Outlined exemptions include:
- Commuting from the permanent address of a parent or legal guardian within 30 miles of the Morrisville campus.
- Attending classes full-time at the Norwich campus.
- 21 years of age or older on the first day of classes in the Fall semester.
- Active military or veteran status.
- Current married or have dependent children.
- International student status.
If you don't meet one of these criteria, you may apply for an exemption for individual extenuating circumstances. Please be sure to address why you need to be released from the Residency Requirement. Specifically, you will want to address what circumstances can only be satisfied by living off campus or commuting that cannot be satisfied on campus.
Examples of reasons why an exemption may be approved include, but are not limited to:
- Considerable financial hardship (i.e. a parent lost a job, significant reduction of income, etc.).
- Documented medical accommodation that cannot be satisfied with on campus housing.
- Significant change in personal health status.
- Demonstration of independent living for at least one year.
- Other situations involving extenuating circumstances.
Indicating that living off campus is cheaper than living on campus will not be considered, without other extenuating circumstances, by the committee as a valid reason for a release.
The committee considers each release request individually. Submitting a form does not guarantee approval to be released from Housing for the next academic year and students should not sign any binding contracts or leases prior to receiving notification of their decision from the Office of Residence Life.
Generally, the committee meets every two weeks to review requests. During break periods and summer, these meetings may occur with less frequency.
