The Morrisville State College athletic department has named juniors Cassie Edmondson (Oshawa, Ontario) and Tom Huber (West Islip, N.Y.) the Mustang Athletes of the Year for 2012-13.
Edmondson, captain for the women’s lacrosse team, has started and played in all 16 games to date this year, and recently received first team all-conference accolades for a second straight season. After moving from her natural low-defensive position to the midfield this season, she recorded 44 goals and added nine assists for 53 points, ranking her 11th in the conference. She is also in the top three in the NEAC in ground balls (62), caused turnovers (30), and ranks seventh in draw controls (62).
Off the field Edmondson is involved in various community service initiatives at Morrisville, including serving as the group leader for the Domestic Violence Awareness Game that raised more than $5000 for the Vera House and One Love Foundation. She also participated in the Special Olympics Polar Plunge event to raise more than $1100 for Special Olympics and has served Vice President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Women’s lacrosse head coach Amanda Nobis, complemented Edmondson on her work ethic on and off the playing field. “She works hard and is one of the most dependable and responsible student-athletes in our program. She truly is what we want all of our athletes to be.”
The human performance and health promotion major at Morrisville State is the daughter of Stacy and Chris Edmondson of Oshawa, Ontario.
A three-year starter for the men’s soccer team and someone described as “the epitome of what it means to be a student-athlete”, Huber provided valuable leadership to a team that captured their first ever conference tournament title and program’s first ever NCAA Division III Championship Tournament bid.
Academically he boasts a 3.49 GPA, has earned his associates degree in liberal arts and science: adolescent education, and in all five semesters at Morrisville, he has been named to the Dean’s List and earned the Liberal Arts Student-Athlete of the Year Award in 2011. He was also named a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Scholar-Athlete last year.
Huber was involved in various community service activities throughout his time at Morrisville, including raising more than $2400 for IACKids this fall. He was also involved in the NYS Model-Senate project, one of 63 participants chosen for a leadership position that included two students from the SUNY system. Huber served as the Vice Chair of the Individual Democratic Contingent and was the model Senate leader of District 35, finding time to also serve as a student representative with the Intercollegiate Athletic Board this past year.
“Tom has been a leader on and off the field since joining the Morrisville soccer program three years ago. He has been instrumental in the transformation of our team and is a major reason why our program is where it is today. His impact on our program will be felt for years to come.”The agricultural business management major is the son of Sheri and Tom Huber of West Islip.
