Elmira College tallied four unanswered goals in the second period to claim the 4-1 victory over Morrisville State College hockey Saturday evening in the consolation round of the Northfield Savings Bank Tournament held at Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont.

Morrisville State finished fourth in the tournament, and dropped to a 2-11-1 overall record. Elmira improved to 8-5-1.

Midway through the first period, Elmira was whistled for a cross-checking and misconduct penalty, in which Geoff Matzel (Chittenango, N.Y.) converted the man advantage score for the Mustangs off assists from Jamie Nelson (Stratford, Ont.) and Curtis Renaud (Carlisle, Ont.).

In the second, the Mustangs held on to the one goal lead until halfway through the period when Kevin Willer ignited the Soaring Eagle offense with two straight tallies, including a power play goal at the 11:23 mark and following with the eventual game winner less than a minute later.

Brendan Sanders then posted a second power play tally for Elmira, netting the third Soaring Eagle score at 14:14. Christian Morissette wrapped up the period with the fourth unanswered Elmira goal with just over a minute to go in the second.

Colin Breen (Waterloo, Ont.) recorded the loss for the Mustangs between the pipes, turning away 35, including 11 in the third.

Elmira's Matt Milne posted 15 stops.

Morrisville State returns to the ice Friday at Elmira, before hosting the Soaring Eagles on Saturday at the IcePlex.
