Matzel leads Morrisville State hockey as the Mustangs down Fredonia, 2-1

Morrisville State College hockey extended their record to 5-3-1 overall behind two scores from junior Geoff Matzel (Chittenango, NY) as the Mustangs downed host SUNY Fredonia 2-1 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action Saturday night in Fredonia.



The win bumps the Mustangs to a 5-2-1 conference record while Fredonia drops to 3-8-0 overall, 3-5 in SUNYAC play.



After a scoreless first period, Matzel was first to post numbers on the scoreboard, netting his sixth score of the season off an assist from James Jarvis (Pickering, ONT) at 8:42 for the one goal Morrisville State lead.



Fredonia responded nearly seven minutes later, evening the contest at one with a power play score from Steve Rizer at 15:35.



In the closing seconds of the second period, Morrisville State was whistled for a check from behind penalty, but Curtis Renaud (Carlisle, ONT) found Matzel for the short handed score at 19:21.



Caylin Relkoff (Grand Forks, BC) secured the win in net for Morrisville, saving 33 on the night, including eight in the final period.



Mark Freisen recorded the loss in net for Fredonia, making 31 stops.
