Morrisville State College hockey nets 3-2 upset over 8th nationally ranked Plattsburgh

Morrisville State College senior netminder Caylin Relkoff (Grand Forks, BC) turned away 32 Cardinal shots, securing the 3-2 upset victory over USCHO.com eighth nationally ranked SUNY Plattsburgh Saturday night in Plattsburgh.



Derek Matheson (Durham, ONT) put the Mustangs on the board late in the first period, netting a power play score with 52 seconds to go in the frame off an assist from Bobby Cass (Burlington, ONT) for the 1-0 lead.



Matt Salmon (Orillia, ONT) extended Morrisville State's lead to two, putting the puck past Cardinal goaltender, Ryan Williams, at 13:03 in the second.



Holding the 2-0 advantage, Plattsburgh was able to rally for their first of the night 7:57 into the final frame, on a power play from Dylan Clarke, cutting the Mustang lead to one. Morrisville State took advantage of a Cardinal tripping penalty at midway through the third, as Chris Cerbino (Highland, NY) put the eventual game winner into the back of the net at 12:29 off assists from Tyler Swan (Barrie, ONT) and Jamie Nelson (Stratford, ONT).



Mike Grace brought the Cardinals to within one with less than four minutes to go, and at 18:31 Morrisville State was whistled for a high sticking penalty late in the period to give Plattsburgh the extra man advantage.



Playing with an empty net and extra man, Plattsburgh could not get the equalizer past Relkoff as Morrisville State collected the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win.



Williams recorded 17 stops (58:17 minutes) in the loss for Plattsburgh as they drop to 2-4 overall, 2-4 in SUNYAC action.



Morrisville State improves to 3-2 overall, 3-1 in conference play, and returns to the ice Friday, hosting SUNY Cortland at 7 p.m. in the Ice Plex.
