Morrisville State hockey nets upset, tops #1 Oswego State 5-2

The Morrisville State College ice hockey team posted the biggest upset victory of the program Saturday night, topping #1 nationally ranked Oswego State 5-2 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action in Oswego.



The win gives the Mustangs an 11-10-1 overall record and 8-5-1 SUNYAC record, while Oswego falls to 20-3-0, dropping their first contest in conference play (13-1).



Morrisville State stunned Oswego with two scores in the first period, the first from Taylor Vince (Barrie, ONT) 5:45 in off assists from Bobby Cass (Burlington, ONT) and Rob Sgarbossa (Campbellville, ONT). Midway through the period, Oswego was whistled for a boarding penalty and a minute into the man advantage, Matt Salmon (Orillia, ONT) found Cass who put away the second Mustang score of the night.



Paul Rodrigues cut the lead to one, netting the first Laker score at the 19:32 mark to end the period.



Tyler Swan (Barrie, ONT) regained the two goal lead for Morrisville State, netting the eventual game winner 12:07 into the second period, off a pass from Curtis Renaud (Carlisle, ONT).



Jamie Nelson (Stratford, ONT) fired one into the back of the bet at the 1:11 mark in the third to give Morrisville State the 4-1 lead, but a power play opportunity for Oswego resulted in a second Laker score at 4:14.



James Jarvis (Pickering, ONT) put the game away for the Mustangs at 12:02, netting the fifth Morrisville State score off assists from Nelson and Nick Kulas (Parma, MI).



Caylin Relkoff (Grand Forks, BC) posted his second consecutive victory between the pipes, turning away 37 to secure the win for the Mustangs.



Oswego's Paul Beckwith posted 29 saves in 59:54, recording his first loss in net of the season.



Morrisville State returns to the ice Friday, hosting Buffalo State College at 7 p.m. in the IcePlex.
