Morrisville State men fall short, Capital collects 77-70 victory in first round of Cole Tournament

The Morrisville State College men's basketball team fell short Friday night in the opening round of the Buffalo State College Cole Tournament, dropping a close 77-70 decision to Capital University in Buffalo.



Morrisville State drops to 3-6 overall, while the Crusaders improved to 5-4.



Mickey Davis (Syracuse, NY) and Brandon Hanks (Syracuse, NY) each tallied 18 points to lead the Mustangs in the loss, adding four steals apiece to their tallies and combining for four assists, while collecting four rebounds each. Darren Green (Rochester, NY) contributed nine points and Andrew Lucio (Solvay, NY) eight, while Kucjok Ater (Syracuse, NY) controlled the boards for Morrisville State, leading the team with seven.



Tim Congrove led Capital with 21 points on 6-for-10 from behind the arc, netting 18 in the second half, while Michael Sommer added 18 points and five assists. Kelly Winter contributed 12 points, six assists and grabbed seven boards in the win.



Capital opened the contest with a 14-4 run, building up as many as a 12 point lead midway through the first half, but Morrisville State's offense responded, igniting their own 22-4 run over an eight minute span, en route to a 34-31 lead at the break.



In the second, Capital regained the lead early on a three point play by Sommer, and the Mustangs remained close, until the Crusaders pulled away with less than two minutes to go converting 6-of-7 free throws and adding a three for the non-conference victory.



The Mustangs shot 41 percent from the floor and from behind the arc, while hitting 15-of-18 from the free throw line in the contest. Capital forced just 11 Morrisville State turnovers on the night.



Morrisville State returns to the court tomorrow, playing in the consolation game at 2 p.m. against either Keuka or Buffalo State.
