Host Morrisville State College women’s lacrosse used a strong offensive second half to down nearby rival Cazenovia College, 18-9, in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action Saturday afternoon in Morrisville.
The win lifts the Mustangs to 4-5 overall, remaining untouched in conference play with a 3-0 record. Cazenovia drops to 5-4, suffering their first NEAC defeat to fall to a 2-1 conference record.
Shelby Wood (Duanesburg, N.Y.) led all scorers on the day, collecting 10 points on seven goals and three assists for Morrisville State, as three additional teammates lit up the scorebook with a combined 11 goals.
Cassie Edmondson (Oshawa, Ontario) posted five tallies and assisted another, while Megan Carlin (Pawling, N.Y.) and Jessica Young (Clifton Park, N.Y.) each registered three, adding a combined six assists to their tallies. Kolleen Brown (Willet, N.Y.) tallied an assist to round out Mustang point scoring.
Cailin Dunphy (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) posted the win between the pipes for Morrisville State, turning away 10.
Cazenovia’s Jessica Cramer (Johnson City, N.Y.) tallied a team best three scores and assisted another to lead the Wildcats, while six additional teammates recorded one a piece, including Kim Vrigian (Clifton Park, N.Y.) who added three assists on the day.
Christina Marra (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) had seven saves in the loss in net for the Wildcats.
Cazenovia came out of the gates quickly, as Cramer stunned the Mustang defense a mere 39 seconds into the contest with a free position tally and leading scorer, Alicia Priest (Camillus, N.Y.) added another seconds later for an early 2-0 Wildcat advantage.
Within minutes, Wood posted her first tally of the afternoon and Carlin registered hers, to knot the game at 2.
Cramer broke the tie in the 12th minute with back-to-back tallies for the 4-2 advantage, but the Mustangs offense got rolling behind an Edmondson unassisted score with 8:07 to go.
Morrisville State went on to outscore Cazenovia 5-1 over the final six minutes of the period, including three straight goals in the final 1:20 of the half for the 8-5 lead at intermission.
In the second, the Mustangs were too much offensively for the Wildcat defense, as they posted 10 scores on 19 shots to collect the 18-9 conference victory.
Morrisville State out shot Cazenovia 35-23 and held the 29-19 advantage in ground balls, but dominated the Wildcats on the draw, 21-8.
The Mustangs return to the field Wednesday, traveling to SUNYIT for a 7 p.m. conference contest.
