Morrisville State softball splits on day one of 2011 season

The Morrisville State College women's softball team opened the 2011 season campaign on Sunday, March 13, splitting with Keystone College at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.



Keystone took the opener, 3-1, on two home run hits by Samantha Hartmann (Red Bank, NJ).



Hartman drove in Carissa Iyoob (Jessup, PA) in the fourth inning to give the Giants the 2-0 lead, but Morrisville State responded as Jessica Rigg (Homer, NY) hit a triple in the fifth, followed by a RBI hit from Gabriella Gallart (Montgovery Village, MD) to cut the lead to one.



Hartman added a second homer in the sixth inning to regain the two run lead, as Iyoob sealed the win on the mound for Keystone, allowing no hits in the final two innings.



Iyoob threw seven innings and allowed two hits, while striking out three for the victory. Hartmann was 2-for-3 from the plate, scoring two runs, and three RBI's.



Freshman Jenna D'Ercole (Highland, NY) recorded the loss on the mound for the Mustangs, throwing seven innings and tallying 13 strike-outs in 27 batters faced in her collegiate debut.



Rigg led Morrisville State from the plate, going 1-for-3.



In the second, Nicole Geier (Mayfield, NY) and Rigg each went 2-for-3 from the plate, combining for four runs, as Morrisville State claimed the 7-3 victory over the Giants.



The Mustangs exploded for three runs in the fifth inning to take the 6-3 lead and added another in the sixth en route to the win.



Kate Jones (Valley Cottage, NY) had three RBI's for the Mustangs.



Amber Nichilo (Staten Island, NY) recorded the win on the mound, throwing seven innings and allowing six hits. Nichilo added three strike outs on the day.



Morrisville State (1-1) returns to the field tomorrow against Hilbert College at Huckabee Park in Myrtle Beach.
