Morrisville State softball splits season opener against Lyndon State College

The Morrisville State College softball team opened the season against Lyndon State College on Feb. 20 at the Adirondack Sports Complex in Glens Falls. The Mustangs went 1-1 on the day, winning the first 4-1 and losing the second 9-1 in six innings. In the first game of the day Kayla Walker (Oneida, NY) scored the first run for the Mustangs in the top of the fourth inning, while Meghan Gadapee tied up the game in the bottom of the fourth, reaching base on a single before being batted in three at bats later. Aryel Lawson (Staten Island, NY) led off in the fifth inning for the Mustangs, reaching base on an error, before Samantha Porter (Newfield, NY) hit a single advancing Lawson home for the go ahead score. Porter then rounded the bases for the second Morrisville State run of the inning, on a Nicole Duchene (Oneida, NY) single. Cassandra Smith (Lansing, NY) put one over the top of the fence in the top of the seventh as the Mustangs took the 4-1 victory. Jenna D'Ercole (Highland, NY) recorded the win on the mound, throwing seven complete innings, allowing nine hits and just one run, while posting nine strikeouts. In the night cap, Lyndon State rebounded with a 9-1 victory in just six innings, as Morrisville State was held to just one run by Eileen Farrell (Johnsonville, NY) in the top of the second inning. Tori Schultz (Camden, NY) had the RBI. Paige Jerrett (Parish, NY) recorded the loss, throwing two innings and allowing five runs, before being relieved by Maranda Owens (Brookfield, NY) and D'Ercole for the final three innings. The Mustangs are back in action March 3 against SUNY Cobleskill at 12 p.m. The game will be played at the Field of Dreams Complex in Schuyler, NY.
