Third seed Morrisville State College women’s lacrosse posted a 20-14 victory over sixth seed Medaille College to advance to the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Mid-Atlantic Championship Tournament semi-final round Wednesday afternoon on Drake Field in Morrisville.
The Mustangs improve to 10-7 overall and will play at second seed McDaniel College on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Green Terrors advanced with an 18-1 defeat of seventh seed Cazenovia earlier this evening.
Shelby Wood (Duanesburg, N.Y.) led all scorers with eight tallies on the day for Morrisville State, dishing out one assist, while Cassie Edmondson (Oshawa, Ontario) and Jessica Young (Clifton Park, N.Y.) each added three goals apiece. Edmondson and Young also combined for three assists.
Meg Carlin (Pawling, N.Y.) and Meghan Soto (Jamaica, N.Y.) scored twice each, as Marissa Buchanan (Waterville, N.Y.) and Kolleen Brown (Willet, N.Y.) rounded out scoring for Morrisville State with one.
Cailin Dunphy (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) posted the win between the pipes, turning away 16, including several on the doorstop in the second half.
Denay O’Connor led Medaille’s efforts with six goals while teammate Emily Brophy contributed four scores and assisted another five.
Brittany Lucas recorded the loss, making three stops in 21 minutes of action, before being relieved by Ameila Wagner who played the final 39, saving eight.
After a Soto score in the opening minutes of the contest for an early 1-0 Mustang lead, Medaille gained momentum and fired off three straight for the 3-1 advantage just six minutes in.
Morrisville State then rattled off five straight tallies to get back in the game and finished the half outscoring Medaille 7-to-3 for a commanding 13-6 lead at the break.
Medaille attempted to get back in the game early with a three goal spurt by O’Connor early in the second period, but Wood and Young each posted tallies to regain the six goal lead for the Mustangs.
The Mavericks were able to get back to within four with back-to-back tallies from Brophy and O’Connor; Brophy on a free position opportunity and O’Connor on a crease feed from Brophy; midway through the half. But Edmondson sprinted the length of the field on the ensuing possession to fire one past Wagner, shifting the momentum back to the Mustangs for the remainder of the contest as they picked up the win to advance.
Edmondson and Carlin each picked up six ground balls as Morrisville State won the ground ball battle over Medaille 31-22. The Mustangs held the narrow 19-17 margin in draw controls, with Wood registering six and Edmondson five.
