The Morrisville State College women’s lacrosse team posted their seventh straight victory Thursday afternoon, notching a 16-8 defeat of conference foe Medaille College on the road in Buffalo.
The win boosts the Mustangs to an overall 8-5 record, a 7-0 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) mark. The victory puts Morrisville State at the top of the conference alongside rival Keuka College (7-0 NEAC).
Cassie Edmondson (Oshawa, Ontario) led the Morrisville State charge with five goals and two assists, adding five ground balls and three draw controls to her tallies. Shelby Wood (Duanesburg, N.Y.) added five tallies while Megan Carlin (Pawling, N.Y.) rounded out top scoring with two goals and two assists, leading the team with four draw controls.
Cailin Dunphy (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) turned away seven between the pipes to secure the win.
Medaille’s Emily Brophy led the Maverick efforts with two goals, assisting another two. Brittany Lucas posted the loss, saving seven.
Morrisville State came out firing in the first half, noting the first seven tallies of the game, including back-to-back scores by Edmondson within 13 seconds early on. The Mustangs carried the offensive momentum into the half, leading 9-2.
In the second, the Mavericks and Mustangs traded scores midway through the period as Medaille climbed within six, but Morrisville State put together an offensive rally over the ensuing five minutes to regain an eight goal advantage.
Medaille had a three goal burst late in the half, but Edmondson and Carlin each put away free position shots for the Mustangs to secure the win.
Morrisville State held the 27-19 advantage in shots, and edged Medaille in draws 14-12, but it was the Mavericks that took the ground ball game 33-25.
Morrisville State returns to the field Saturday, turning the campus from green to purple as they host Wells College at 1 p.m. for their Domestic Violence Awareness game, on Drake Field, a contest to benefit the Vera House in Syracuse, and One Love Foundation.
On Sunday, they round out their regular season schedule hosting Keuka at 1 p.m. in a rematch of last year’s championship tournament final.
