Wood, Young lead Morrisville State women to 18-12 victory over Misericordia

Sophomore Shelby Wood (Duanesburg, N.Y.) and senior Jessica Young (Clifton Park, N.Y.) combined for 14 goals and five assists to lead the Morrisville State College women’s lacrosse team to a 18-12 non-conference victory over visiting Misericordia Wednesday afternoon in Morrisville.

The Mustangs net their first win of the 2013 season, improving to 1-3, while the Cougars continue to eye their first victory, dropping to 0-5.

Wood posted eight goals and two assists to lead Morrisville State, while fellow teammate Young tallied a career high six goals and three assists. Megan Carlin (Pawling, N.Y.) added two goals and assisted another two, as Kolleen Brown (Willet, N.Y.) and Cassie Edmondson (Oshawa, Ontario) each notched one. 



Brown also posted a collegiate best three assists.

Cailin Dunphy (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) picked up her first collegiate win between the pipes, saving 23, including several on the doorstop and 14 in the second half. Misericordia out shot the Mustangs 44-29.

Catie Viegas and Brooke North led the Misericordia efforts, posting four scores each, while Jennie Perucca registered two goals and an assist.

Erika Proctor recorded four saves in the loss for the Cougars.

Morrisville State jumped out to an 8-0 lead midway through the opening period before the Cougars were able to put one on the board with just under 11 minutes to go in the first.

Viegas rattled off three straight to cut the Mustang lead to four, but Wood and Young regained a commanding six goal lead with a tally each, sending the Mustangs into the half with a 11-5 advantage.

Early in the second Misericordia pulled to within four, but Young fired off two straight, including the game winner, for the six goal cushion.

Dunphy sealed the win for Morrisville State in the final 11 minutes, posting seven of her 23 saves to keep the Cougars at length.

Morrisville State returns to the field March 29th, traveling to SUNY Canton.
