Back in 2014, the SUNY Morrisville football team came together for an unprecedented season, as the Mustangs rewrote the record books, captured the attention of national audiences and left an undeniable mark on the program’s and college’s athletics history.
A decade later, the Mustangs were able to huddle up once again, this time to cement their legacy as one of SUNY Morrisville’s all-time greats with their induction into the Athletics Wall of Fame.
Players and coaches from the 2014 team, accompanied by family, friends and members of the college community, were collectively recognized during the “Night of Champions – Class of 2024” ceremony as part of Mustang Weekend this past fall.
“As we sit gathered here tonight, we’re delighted to ensure the feats of those that aspired to greatness as Mustangs will always be remembered as part of our proud institution and athletics history,” said Associate Athletic Director Brandy Thurston while serving as MC of the event.
Led by an explosive, nationally ranked offense, the 2014 Mustangs established new statistical marks throughout the Mustang record books en route to a program-best 8-2 regular season record and a share of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) title. That also secured the program’s first-ever bid to an NCAA DIII postseason bowl game, where they captured the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) North Central Bowl championship on Drake Field behind an MVP performance from quarterback Lemar Johnson, a Wall of Fame Class of 2023 inductee.
That memorable season also saw the Mustangs take home numerous regional and national accolades, including NJAC Offensive Player of the Year and Coaching Staff of the Year, D3football.com All-Region honors, ECAC All-Star selections, preseason All-America recognitions and several all-conference and player of the week honorees.
