From the President: Stay safe this Labor Day weekend, and a warning from other SUNY institutions

Dear Students,

Classes have already been back in session for two full weeks and things are going great. As we enter Labor Day weekend, I want to remind you to maintain our safety protocols to keep you and your fellow students safe.

We are in close communication with area law enforcement and public health officials, who are on the lookout for any large gatherings and will report information back to us if student involvement is suspected or individuals are identified.

You may have heard in the news that SUNY Oneonta, not far from here, experienced a rapid increase in positive cases of COVID-19. As a result, that campus was forced to go into quarantine, moved all classes online, and have now sent students home for the rest of the semester. So far, five students have been suspended for their roles in breaking safety protocols that contributed to this outbreak.

Additionally, 43 students have been suspended from SUNY Plattsburgh after hosting or attending a party off campus on Lake Champlain. Similar incidents, and non-compliance of COVID-19 safety precautions, have resulted in suspensions of students for gatherings both on and off campuses at SUNY Albany, Geneseo, Fredonia and Cobleskill.

SUNY Morrisville will not hesitate to take the same actions, should the need arise. We do not wish to join the list of institutions who have had to suspend students, or who have had to move online or send students home.

As a reminder, the expectations of our campus are that you wear a mask over your nose and mouth, practice physical distancing at all times, and avoid gathering in large groups.

I appreciate how difficult this situation is, and it is unfortunate that you cannot have all the normal college experiences you deserve. We are a community. If we stay strong now, we can all get through this together.

Your hard work and diligence have kept us safe. Let’s keep it going!

Sincerely,

David E. Rogers, Ph.D.| President
