How to Become a Peer Tutor

Students who have earned a 2.75 or higher cumulative GPA after taking at least 12 college credits are eligible to apply to become a peer tutor for the Morrisville Campus Tutoring Center. Applicants must have earned at least B (3.00) in a course to be eligible to tutor students taking that class. To apply, students should submit a completed Peer Tutor Application form, their resume, and a cover letter. For help with preparing resumes and cover letters, students should contact Career Services.

Successful applicants may elect to be paid employees or to volunteer as tutors. For 2020-21, the starting pay rate for peer tutors is $12.50/hour. Peer tutors usually work 5-10 hours/week during fall and spring semesters. Depending on a variety of factors, tutors may conduct individual and/or small group tutoring sessions, may tutor in person and/or virtually, and may offer drop-in and or appointment-based sessions.

Students who are selected as peer tutors are required to participate in and complete new peer tutor during their first semester of working or volunteering as a peer tutor in order to return to the position in future semesters. Peer tutors have the option to earn one elective credit for completing new peer tutor training by enrolling in GNED 203: Peer Tutor Training I. Training assignments and expectations are the same whether the peer tutor opts to earn credit or not. Peer tutors have the option to do additional training (GNED 204: Peer Tutor Training II) after completing mandatory training. Ongoing training also occurs each semester or year due to operational changes at the Tutoring Center or as mandated for all employees at the college.
