NightOWL Online Tutoring

The Tutoring Center offers its NightOWL online tutoring service through Morrisville's membership in the STAR-NY (Sharing Tutoring and Academic Resources New York) Consortium.  In addition to Morrisville, approximately twenty other colleges belong to STAR-NY.  These member campuses hire tutors who can help students enrolled at any of the participating campuses.

The STAR-NY online tutoring platform offers chat, whiteboard, audio, and video features to use during tutoring sessions. All NightOWL sessions are one-to-one between a student and a real tutor (not a bot) for up to 60 minutes. These sessions are recorded and archived in the student’s locker on the STAR-NY website so they can download and review them later if they want.

NIGHTOWL is open May 11-June 30, for the Summer 2025 term from 7:00 p.m. to midnight, on Sundays through Thursdays. NightOWL tutors will support the following subjects/courses during this term:

•    MATH (SKLS 091; MAGN 101 & 107; MATH 102, 103, 123, 127, 141, 147, 151, 152, 153, & 161)
•    Writing assignments for any classes through the master's level (except in foreign language courses)

Instructions for Working With a NightOWL/Star-NY Tutor:

  • Students are helped in the order that they log in to the tutoring platform. If a student is already working with the tutor(s), other students will remain in a virtual "waiting room." They will be taken into the tutor's room when the previous student's session is complete.
  • While NightOWL/STAR-NY is mostly a drop-in tutoring service, limited appointments are available. Instructions about appointments are available on the STAR-NY website after signing in.
  • For optimal performance when using NightOWL/STAR-NY online tutoring, do the following:
    • Use a laptop, desktop, or tablet with an updated version of Google Chrome, Firefox, or MS Edge.
    • Turn off Pop-Up Blockers.
    • Use of a phone is NOT recommended as some features of STAR-NY may not function.
  • Click here to log into the STAR-NY tutoring site.
  • Next, scroll to the bottom of the page to click on the "Tutor Request" button.
  • Then follow the steps to sign into the platform and select the “room” for the subject with which you would like assistance.
