Townsend, Matzel named Mustang Athletes of the Week

The Morrisville State College athletic department has named freshman Nijah Townsend (Bronx, NY) and junior Geoff Matzel (Chittenango, NY)) the Mustang Athletes of the Week for the week ending December 5.



Townsend, forward for the women's basketball team, led Morrisville State to a 2-1 week, averaging 19.7 points and 12 rebounds per game for the Mustangs. In the win over St. Elizabeth, Townsend posted a collegiate best 23 points, and tallied a collegiate best 17 rebounds in the victory over Wilson.



Currently leading the team in rebounding, and second in scoring, Townsend is averaging 14.9 points and 10.1 rebounds per game for the Mustangs.



The 2010 graduate of Harry S. Truman High is majoring in criminal justice at Morrisville State. She is the daughter of Yvette and Desmond Townsend of Bronx.



Matzel, forward on the Mustangs ice hockey team, led Morrisville State to a 1-0-1 weekend, scoring twice (one power play) against No. 15 ranked Buffalo State College in a 3-3 overtime draw Friday night, and netting both scores in a 2-1 defeat of Fredonia the following night. The game winner over the Blue Devils was a shorthanded tally.



Matzel currently leads the Mustangs in scoring with seven goals and five assists for 12 points as Morrisville State is tied for second in the conference with a 5-2-1 record.



Majoring in business administration at Morrisville State College, Matzel is the son of Kathy and Peter Matzel of Chittenango, New York.
