The Renewable Energy Training Center (RETC) at Morrisville State College is offering a one-day workshop on anaerobic digestion (AD), Dec. 14 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the RETC bioenergy lab in Galbreath Hall, room 148. This beginner-level course covers the status of AD in New York state, basic AD system components, AD biological and chemical processes, preventative and corrective maintenance of the engine-generator set and system, and future opportunities in the field.

A group of Morrisville State College students traveled to Waterville, Maine to help local dairy farmers and learn more about the industry. The 21 students were part of the Northeast Regional Dairy Challenge, an innovative three-day event which promotes the future of the dairy industry. They joined more than 100 other students from nine northeast colleges and two Canadian universities.

Chickens and rabbits on a rooftop amid a blanket of green grass peppered with herbs and colorful vegetables set against a backdrop of city skyline. They weren't the images that popped into Morrisville State College student Cora Mason's mind when she pictured urban farming. Yet high atop concrete buildings, above the noise and congestion of the streets of New York City, farmers are making it happen—a viable way to grow food called rooftop farming.

With his face inching closer to the shiny trout he held delicately in his hands, Daniel Leigh's eyes focused with intense concentration. He gently rubbed the trout's belly and grinned in amazement as tiny, yellow-colored eggs dropped out. “Here come the eggs, look—here they come,” Jace Reel pointed excitedly as he watched nearby. “This is pretty cool, but the fish was so slimy” said Leigh, who has never touched a fish before.

As he approached the body, careful not to disrupt any evidence, Mat Voorhees turned to his team and said, “let's measure and mark these.” Desteney Hargrove quickly took out a ruler and began measuring the distance of a large, bloodied knife to a victim lying dead on his back nearby.

Hilary Corna, national speaker and author of One White Face, will give a presentation on Oct. 22 at the Morrisville State College campus.  The presentation, “Create Your Own Opportunity and Embrace Your Potential: I Dare You” will be held at 1 p.m. in the Little Theatre of the John W. Stewart Center for Student Activities (STUAC). 

The Morrisville State College Theatre Department and Student Government Organization (SGO) will present the play, A Midsummer Night's Dream, in the Little Theatre of the John W. Stewart Center for Student Activities (STUAC) on the Morrisville State College campus. Show times are: Oct. 19, 20 and 25-27 at 8 p.m. A matinee performance will be held Oct. 21 at 2 p.m.

Longtime supporter at Morrisville State College, Dr. Sheila Johnson, was recently awarded the Diversity and Inclusion (DANDI) award in the entrepreneur category, for her involvement at the college.

Morrisville State College will host a presentation by bestselling mob author, Dennis Griffin, on Oct. 11 at 9:30 a.m. in the Little Theatre of the James W. Stewart Center for Student Activities (STUAC). The event, which is sponsored by the Criminal Justice Department and the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) faculty/staff and students, is free and open to the public.

Steve Law intentionally had his pole barn built facing south on his picturesque, 13-acre property with future plans to install solar panels that would offset some of his energy costs. The hefty price tag on a new solar system kept his plans at bay until recently when he heard about Solarize Madison, a program that's helping home owners, businesses and others install solar energy panels at a discounted rate with fewer hurdles.

Jennifer Cook had it down to a science. “You want them to stand square so people can look at them, and you walk them up and down so they can also watch how they move,” the Morrisville State College student explained about presenting Standardbred horses to potential buyers during the college's annual yearling sale.

Three Morrisville State College students stepped into the equine show ring this summer, taking home an array of colorful accolades and harnessing a world of experience. Katie McIntyre, Jamie Anderson and Marc Wirasnik represented Morrisville State College showing and competing at various events during a 12-week internship at the college's draft horse barn.

Morrisville State College recently served up some of its tasty local fare on Capitol Hill. The college showcased an array of food samples during New York Farm Day held in Washington DC on Sept. 12, an annual event which boasts New York state agricultural products. The event, sponsored by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, attracted approximately 700 federal officials, guests, area restaurant operators and media.

Katy Kemmeren has something new to add to her resume. The Morrisville State College student spent the last few months coordinating the college's annual Autumn Review Sale as part of her senior year internship. Kemmeren, an agricultural business development bachelor degree major, was among more than 90 students in various majors who pitched in during Morrisville State College annual Autumn Review Sale, which marked its 30th anniversary this year.

The Morrisville College Equine Institute will hold its twenty-third annual Fall Yearling Sale Sept. 24 at 11 a.m. at the college's Nancy Sears Stowell Arena on Swamp Road. The preview day for the sale, the largest of its kind in New York state, is Sept. 23.

Morrisville State College has a lineup of events planned for Mustang Weekend Sept. 28-30. The weekend festivities are open to Morrisville State College students, family members, faculty, staff, alumni and emeriti, and members of the local community.

September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Every year, suicide claims the lives of more than 36,000 Americans (one every 16 minutes), and more than one million worldwide. Morrisville State College student Catherine Flood would like to help make a difference in those staggering statistics.

The Morrisville State College Dairy Club will hold its thirtieth annual Autumn Review Sale on Sept. 8, 2012. The sale will begin at 11 a.m. at the Madison County Cooperative Extension Center on Eaton Street in Morrisville.

A team of four-legged favorites moved into Morrisville State College's building for the duration of The Great New York State Fair which runs Aug. 23-Sept. 3. Fair-goers can learn more about the horses; a Belgian gelding, a Percheron mare, a Standardbred brood mare with a filly foal, and a Paint cross, at the college's building located near Gate 4 by the Coca-Cola Coliseum and the Iroquois Indian Village.

A coach once told Graeme Townshend he would never make it to the National Hockey League (NHL). They were tough words for the aspiring hockey player to hear, but ones that motivated him to prove the coach wrong.

Do you love country music and have been waiting to see some of the biggest artists live? If so, then now is your chance, at the NY Country Jam 2012. The Country Jam will take place on July 13 from 2 to 11 p.m. and July 14 from noon to 11 p.m. on the home field of the Madison-Bouckville Antique Festival, located on Route 20 in Bouckville. There will be an impressive lineup of today’s top country music artists, followed by firework displays after the last performances.

Morrisville State College's Renewable Energy Training Center (RETC) will be offering a two day hands-on workshop, Renewable Energy Beyond the Classroom, designed for K-12 teachers. The workshop, which will explore renewable energy and assembling real systems, will be held on July 19 and 20 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. in Shannon and Galbreath Halls. Sessions include: Solar Overview and Solar Thermal Installation, Biodiesel, Microhydro Installation and Wood Gasification.

The School of Science and Technology at Morrisville State College awarded the following scholarships to students, graduates. The School of Science and Technology Award, based on academic excellence and campus involvement, was presented to Amber Jones, of Rome, Joshua Young of Sherburne and Daniel Cleveland, of Sherburne.

Race your way to the finish line at the Morrisville State College Children's Center's fourth annual 5k race for ChildRUN Saturday, July 14. Also, a Fun Run that consists of one mile will be available for younger children along with their family and friends.
