It was a day to learn all things agriculture! And there was plenty to learn about from horses, aquaculture and dairy, to maple syrup and soil science.  Twenty-five booths were part of this year’s Ag Day at SUNY Morrisville, which attracted nearly 500 participants, including students from Hamilton, Madison, Stockbridge Valley and Morrisville-Eaton’s agriculture programs.

Regional universities and regional colleges are divided and ranked in four geographical groups: North, South, Midwest and West. 

SUNY Morrisville’s annual Autumn Review Sale, “Magic of Morrisville,” is Saturday, Sept. 23.   The sale starts at 11 a.m. at the college’s former draft horse barn at 5350 Hart Road in Morrisville, near the Arnold R. SUNY Morrisville’s woods sports team is gearing up for a new season and is looking for new members to join them!   Coach Seth Carsten, a former professional woodsman, is seeking veterans and rookies of varying majors and abilities to join the team, which showcases speed and precision with axes, chainsaws and other tools associated with traditional lumberjacking challenges.

SUNY Morrisville welcomed its largest incoming class in years with 950  students. “This has been an incredible year for SUNY Morrisville,” said Caleb McGuire, director of Admissions. “I’ve been honored to work with our Admissions team and faculty and staff across campus to help each of these 950 students find their place at SUNY Morrisville.” 

There was no containing the excitement in Sarah Dickinson’s voice — her lifelong dream of helping horses finally coming true as she checked in as a new student during SUNY Morrisville’s Welcome Weekend events, Aug 24-27.   The 18-year-old SUNY Morrisville student, from Ripley, followed her passion for horses, enrolling in the college’s equine science, equine rehabilitation program. 

SUNY Morrisville’s Norwich Campus has partnered with local organization, ACHIEVE, to help strengthen New York’s direct support professional workforce.   The move follows a recent announcement from SUNY regarding schools partnering with the New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) through a direct support microcredential program that will provide training leading to national certification in the field of developmental disabilities. 

SUNY Morrisville can be spotted throughout this year’s Great New York State Fair, which runs Wednesday, Aug. 23-Monday, Sept. 4.

MORRISVILLE, NY — Carrianne Bush wouldn’t trade her internship for anything. The agricultural science student’s day starts feeding goats — giving them hay and grain in SUNY Morrisville’s livestock barn, then moves to the dairy complex, where calves are under her loving care.  “It’s opening a world of opportunities for me,” the 19-year-old Oneida resident said of her summer internship in SUNY Morrisville’s livestock program.

MORRISVILLE, NY — A steady rain didn’t deter hundreds of visitors from learning more about SUNY Morrisville’s dairy complex, programs, cows, calves and baby goats, during Open Farm Day, held Saturday, July 29.

MORRISVILLE, NY — SUNY Morrisville’s Arnold R. Fisher Dairy Complex is among farms throughout Madison County that will open its doors and showcase its facility to the public during Open Farm Day on Saturday, July 29. Open Farm Day, held from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., offers visitors an opportunity to see 26 working farms in Madison County, meet local farmers, enjoy tours and demonstrations, animals and products tastings.  

Growing fish and vegetables together is the latest collaboration among three SUNY Morrisville professors, thanks to a grant from the New York Farm Viability Institute.  The grant will enable SUNY Morrisville professors Elisa Livengood (aquaculture), Jennifer Gilbert Jenkins (agricultural science) and Adam Olinski (horticulture) to examine the feasibility of aquaculture and aquaponics protein production in community garden spaces. 

SUNY Morrisville recent graduates Meaghan Miller, of West Irondequoit, and Camberly VanValkenburg, of Walton, have been honored with the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence (CASE).

MORRISVILLE, NY — There’s a common theme that characterizes SUNY Morrisville graduate Natalia Clarke’s life and academic journey — “jump in with both feet.” It’s the message the 2023 graduate gave to fellow students, parents, faculty, staff and friends in her commencement speech as outgoing president of the Student Government Organization (SGO).

The tradition gives faculty, staff and students a chance to partake in acts of kindness that tie into sustainability and inspire them to protect the environment. 

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. — SUNY Morrisville is hosting a youth dairy fitting, feeding and showing clinic Sunday, April 23, at the Arnold R. Fisher Dairy Complex. The free event, from 1-3:30 p.m., includes lunch at 1 p.m., followed by a tour of the dairy complex and rotations between feeding, fitting and showing clinics from 2-3:30 p.m. The event is open to all youth interested in dairy cattle fitting, feeding and showing.

The SUNY Morrisville men’s ice hockey team will be lacing up their skates Friday night as they play host to SUNY Canton at the Morrisville IcePlex, but for the team, it’s more than just a game; it’s the opportunity to share something they love with the young eyes that one day hope for the same opportunity.  

Interested in making a game and being part of a global experiment in creativity? SUNY Morrisville is once again serving as a host site for Global Game Jam®, the world’s largest game jam event, taking place Friday, Feb. 3-Sunday, Feb. 5.  During the worldwide event, participants are given a central theme and just 48 hours to create a video or board/card game.

SUNY Morrisville has added a Bachelor of Technology degree in agricultural science to its program lineup.  The new bachelor’s degree, which launches in Fall 2023, enables students to choose from four specialty tracks: dairy management, agronomy, livestock management, and agricultural outreach and education. 

Wendy Groves can still remember that first day of drop off at the Children’s Center on the SUNY Morrisville campus nearly 30 years ago.

With the college’s official launch of the Campaign for Morrisville, an initiative that will strengthen resources for generations of Mustangs, there’s never been a more exciting time at SUNY Morrisville. “We’re laying the foundation for the next 100 years of applied education,” said Theresa Kevorkian, vice president for Institutional Advancement. “This transformative campaign is going to change the future of our college.”

As the world came together to acknowledge Earth Day this year, SUNY Morrisville was planting a new seed — a campus tradition that joined acts of kindness with sustainability to celebrate the day.

The story of George and Barb Elias is a perfect reminder that anyone can leave an extraordinary legacy. George Elias ’70 (instrument technology) endowed a scholarship in honor of his late wife, Barb ’81 (horse husbandry), the Barbara A. Elias ’81 Endowed Scholarship Fund.  Barb left a trail of giving that spread from New York State to Colorado and many places in-between. The scholarship George created will continue her legacy.

High upon a hill overlooking the SUNY Morrisville campus, students, faculty and staff are working long before the sun rises. Some are milking cows in the college’s high-tech milking parlor, while others are recording data on computers, pushing feed and performing other necessary tasks. 

Wood products technology students are winding down from a productive semester, which included various wood processing and furniture design and construction class projects.
