The Morrisville State College athletic department has named hunt seat rider, Teal Pedersen (Manorville, NY) and ice hockey forward, Chris Cerbino (Highland, NY) it's Mustang Athletes of the Week for the week ending November 14. Pedersen earned high point rider honors for the second time this season, collecting blue ribbons in the intermediate equitation over fences and intermediate on the flat classes on Sunday as Morrisville State claimed reserve team show champion honors.
Morrisville State College athletic director, Greg Carroll, and head coach, Joseph Smith, recently announced the addition of Matthew VanDeusen as the assistant coach of the men's basketball program for the 2010-2011 season. The 2009 graduate of the University of New England with a bachelor's in political science, played four seasons for the men's basketball and golf programs. While at New England, he earned Commonwealth Coast Academic All-Conference honors and was a National Student-Athlete Award Winner. In 2009, he earned the UNE Athletics Senior Leadership Award.
Despite four players in double digits for the Mustangs, Morrisville State College women's basketball team dropped their second straight on the road, falling to SUNY Canton by a 57-69 final in Ogdensburg. Nijah Townsend (Bronx, NY) paced Morrisville State with her first collegiate double-double, netting 11 points while grabbing 10 boards.
The Morrisville State College hunt seat equestrian team placed third on Saturday and were reserve champions on Sunday as they hosted a double show at the Fearon Road barn. On Saturday, the Mustangs fell just one point shy of reserve team honors, compiling 29 team points to finish third behind show champion, Skidmore, and reserve champion Siena.
Morrisville State College head coach, Sean Pinkerton, along with athletic director, Greg Carroll, announced the addition of Aliza Bogdanich, as an assistant coach on the women's basketball coaching staff. During her four-year basketball career at St. Lawrence University, Bogdanich received D3Hoops Women's All-East Region Team honors, was named the Liberty League Player of the Year, and Most Valuable Player for the 2003-2004 season. Her team was the NCAA Division III runner-up her freshman year.
The Morrisville State College men's basketball team opened the 2010-2011 season campaign Monday night with a loss to visiting Clarkson University by a 78-67 final in Morrisville. Morrisville State led by one with 9:40 to go in the first half before Clarkson went on a 14-2 run to take a 36-27 lead at the half. In the second, Morrisville State pulled to within five, but the Golden Knights hit key free throws down the stretch to secure the non-conference victory.
Morrisville State College freshman defensive back, Jeremy Stewart (Moravia, NY) has been named the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Defensive Rookie of the Week for the week ending November 13. Stewart earns the honors for the second time this season, after playing a key role in Morrisville State's 48-25 conference win over Western Connecticut State University. He tallied five tackles, four solo stops, and notched a pair of interceptions, one of which was returned 25-yards for a touchdown.
The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has named Morrisville State sophomore forward, Chris Cerbino (Highland, NY) its Ice Hockey Player of the Week for the week ending November 14. Cerbino notched his first two scores of the season in a 1-1 week for Morrisville State, netting the game winning score on a power play midway through the third period to propel the Mustangs to a 3-2 upset win over eighth nationally ranked SUNY Plattsburgh on Saturday.
The Morrisville State College football team posted a 48-25 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) victory over visiting Western Connecticut State University Saturday afternoon on Drake Field in Morrisville. Morrisville State was first to strike, putting six up on the scoreboard with 11:24 to go in the first quarter as Kaylin Johnson (Jamaica, NY) blocked the Colonials punt attempt which set up a 24-yard pass from senior Joe Shue (Fulton, NY) to AJ Latta (Middletown, NY) for the score.
Morrisville State College senior netminder Caylin Relkoff (Grand Forks, BC) turned away 32 Cardinal shots, securing the 3-2 upset victory over USCHO.com eighth nationally ranked SUNY Plattsburgh Saturday night in Plattsburgh. Derek Matheson (Durham, ONT) put the Mustangs on the board late in the first period, netting a power play score with 52 seconds to go in the frame off an assist from Bobby Cass (Burlington, ONT) for the 1-0 lead.
