Four posted three or more goals Wednesday afternoon, as Morrisville State College men’s lacrosse rolled to a 16-4 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) victory over visiting SUNY IT on Drake Field in Morrisville. The Mustangs pick up their first win of the season to improve their record to 1-4, 1-0 in conference action, while the Wildcats have yet to notch one in the victory category, falling to 0-8 on the season, 0-1 in conference play.
The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) office has announced its weekly award winners, naming Morrisville State College freshman goalkeeper, Cailin Dunphy (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) the women’s lacrosse defensive player of the week. Dunphy recorded her first collegiate win between the pipes for the Mustangs last week, recording 23 saves and a 65.7 save percentage to preserve an 18-12 victory over non-conference opponent Misericordia. Seven of Dunphy’s saves were in the closing minutes of the second half, made on the doorstop of the crease.
The Morrisville State College western equestrian team completed their 2012-13 season Saturday at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) national semi-finals in Syracuse. The Mustangs finished fifth overall in team competition with 16 points, with team riders finishing in the top six spots in their respective classes. The University of Nebraska (27) edged out Ohio State University (26) for show championship honors. Oswego followed in third, compiling 24 team points, with Clemson claiming the fourth team spot with 18.
The Morrisville State College women’s lacrosse team is taking a stand against domestic violence and throughout the month of April will be raising awareness and donations to assist the Vera House and One Love Foundation, organizations that provide assistance to victims of domestic violence. According to the National Institute of Justice and the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, every year approximately 4.8 million women are victimized by intimate partners. Sadly, the statistics show that one in every three women fall victim to intimate partner violence.
Sophomore Shelby Wood (Duanesburg, N.Y.) and senior Jessica Young (Clifton Park, N.Y.) combined for 14 goals and five assists to lead the Morrisville State College women’s lacrosse team to a 18-12 non-conference victory over visiting Misericordia Wednesday afternoon in Morrisville. The Mustangs net their first win of the 2013 season, improving to 1-3, while the Cougars continue to eye their first victory, dropping to 0-5.
The Morrisville State College men’s lacrosse team dropped their home opener by a 11-7 final Tuesday afternoon to visiting University of New England, in near blizzard conditions on Drake Field in Morrisville. The Mustangs are off to a 0-4 start on the season and will return to the field Saturday, hosting non-conference rival SUNY Oswego at 11 a.m. on Drake Field. The Nor’Easters improve to 4-2.
The Morrisville State College women’s lacrosse team opened the 2013 home schedule with a 22-8 loss to visiting Roberts Wesleyan College Saturday afternoon in Morrisville. The Mustangs fall to 0-3 on the start of the season. Roberts improves to 3-3. Shelby Wood (Duanesburg, N.Y.) led the Morrisville State efforts, posting five goals while teammates Cassie Edmondson (Oshawa, Ontario) and Jessica Young (Clifton Park, N.Y.) each added a score and assisted another. Kolleen Brown (Willet, N.Y.) rounded out Mustang scoring with one.
The Morrisville State College men’s basketball season came to an end Saturday night, as they dropped the sectional round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament to host St. Mary’s College (27-3) by a 84-66 final in St. Mary’s City, Maryland.
The Morrisville State College athletics department has named Cailin Dunphy (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) and Brandon Hanks (Syracuse, N.Y.) the Mustangs Athletes of the Week for the week ending March 10. Dunphy, freshman for the women’s lacrosse team, posted 11 saves in nearly 38 minutes of play in net in the Mustangs 12-9 loss against Elmira. Also a field player at attack, Dunphy registered an unassisted score late in the contest, while adding seven ground balls and a caused turnover to her tallies.
The Morrisville State College hunt seat equestrian team earned reserve high point team honors Saturday, recording 37 team points, nearly edging Regional leader Skidmore College at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) invitational in Morrisville. Skidmore was high point team with 41 points. Four Mustangs took home top show honors, including Keely O’Hara who claimed a first in the open equitation on the flat.
